The breaks are getting shorter and shorter each year though - but next year presuming Seven still have the rights I imagine they'll also be a two-week break for the Olympics.
Five's best bet would be to get their hands on a US teen drama of some sort which could run in the 6-7pm slot for 5 weeks at the beginning of the year.

Why are we not allowed to catch up and air them on the same day?
If they cant do that, then maybe air H&A Mon - Thurs, with Friday airing a new one hour teen drama each week for 20 weeks or something like that.

They'd be out of synch then though.
No reason why they couldn't air them the same day - it might be a TV myth but IIRC at one point Ireland were actually ahead of Australia.
I doubt Five will actually be brave enough though to take too long a gap so I bet we'd end up with the series finishing around Christmas three or four weeks behind Australia but the next season premiering just a week or so behind, with a further couple of weeks taken off in the summer.

I doubt Seven would have let Ireland air the episodes before Australia. Were still along way off though arent we. Similar gap with Neighbours, give or take a few weeks.

It takes 6 weeks off each Christmas in Oz which is quite a long break . Neighbours only take 3 or 4 weeks.
We will only be 11 weeks behind once the 2007 season starts, then 5 weeks when the 2008 season starts, then there will be the Olympics 2 week break meaning we will be 3 weeks behind so Five will need to start taking breaks within the next 2 years.

There was actually an occasion, don't ask how it happened, that Ireland did indeed broadcast one episode before it had aired in Australia. I believe they got a fine because of it too!

Fun Fact : New Zealand used to regularly be ahead of Australia on screenings of 'Blue Heelers'
