The former. The original was a model with no prior acting experience, so they've done the right thing.

That previous Clare was dreadful. She looked a bit pneumatic and simply couldn't act. Maybe she either (a) got the sack or (b) exploded.

It's a shame C4 isn't giving Hollyoaks the promotion it deserves at the moment.
It's got three pretty big love-triangle type storylines going on - all completly different - with Sarah/Rhys/Sarah's psycho mum, Max/Claire/Sean and Justin/Becca/Jake - all of which are playing a major part in the storylines over the next couple of weeks.
I must say I'm loving the Barnes family at the moment - the best "oldies" in the show for a while.
The Ashworth parents have hardly been seen since they moved in, while it's annoying me how after Sam was sent down for rape we saw nothing of the Owen's for ages, and then Sam and Nicole have turned up talking about how bad things are at home, but we don't see any of it!
There are rumours that the producers want to try and take Hollyoaks in the direction of the OC - and hopefully that will lead to the older (i.e. over 25!) members of the cast being more integrated into the show and also having storylines outside those involving their kids.
One thing the OC does do well is though it is a teen drama, it has strong older characters and storylines based around them as well!

Six characters will be killed off later this year in a massive fireball, according to reports this morning.
Two new families are coming in though - the Valentines will be a black family with Floella Benjamin rumoured to be the mother (that will get killed off within 3 episodes!), while the McQueens are a family of stunners.
The show will also become much grittier, with less silly storylines!
I hope though they keep some silliness - as after all Hollyoaks is the only soap that can get away with it!
I've said before I'm not sure about bringing in more families - if they are they need to make the parents strong central characters rather than just extras who appear once a month!
What the show really needs is a big batch of new students - at the moment we've just got a crop of the ones that have survived the axe over the last few years!

Just watching the show this week I've been saying to myself "this is better" - not in the big storyline kind of way but the general writing and acting.
Jo Hallows has been replaced as series producer by David Hanson after years in the position (possibly since the first series), while alot of the Corrie team have joined the show.
And as for Friday's episode (shown tonight on E4) - well, I can't say there has been a better half hour of soap this year!

Been meaning to post this all week but the show really is just getting better. Coronation Street's losses have certainly been Hollyoaks' gain!
The conclusion of the Justin/Becca storyline has been surperb all round - I can't fault any of it! This mixed in with the fall out of Max and OB and the fall out of Grace's death has made this week unmissable!
The overall standard of the show is so much better now than just a few months ago. They seem to be using music more effectively now throughout the programme, not just the opening scenes, which often works so much better than padding out a script!
My only disapointment of recent months is how we haven't seen Rob and Carrie Owen at all since Sam was sent down. There is a storyline there, but it's only ever referred to in passing by Nicole and Sam in scenes with their friends.
