Looks like Hollyoaks is about to get some competition in the teen soap market as Teletext are reporting that Five have commissioned a new teen soap to run in it's 6.30pm slot, with 40 episodes being made and the option for a further 200.

In reality though it'll probably be no more competition than Family Affairs was (and I watch at 7pm now anyhow!) - it's Five who will really be shooting themselves in the foot as they'll have to do something about "First Chance" Home and Away on Five Life - about the only success story so far from their digital channels.

I am disapointed though that Hollyoaks failed to really take advantage of the end of Family Affairs - where have all their viewers gone?

In what way could Hollyoaks have taken advantage of FA being axed?

I was thinking the "You can't watch Family Affairs, you'll have to watch us instead" way!

Family Affairs - i wonder what sort of people did watch that show? I never did because other things were on, but from what i did see it did look good, had a very loyal following.

Where did all the Brookside viewers go Laughing

Back to Hollyoaks, does anyone know weather the JP + Craig gay storyline is going ahead?

But id say that they were different target audiences even though they were both soaps - Family Affairs was more the Corrie and EE audience, and Hollyoaks is more the Home and Away/Neighbours type of audience.

And Brekkie, what have you put in the thread description Shocked Honestly you are as bad a Banks Smile lol only joking Wink

FA was a very good soap, different to Hollyoaks so I cant really compare them. FA was miles better than EE but only got a fraction of the viewers due to being on Five.

Oh and I hope John Paul is gay - he is really cute I think Smile

Look's certainly possible. When JP let Hannah go off today my dad (who doesn't usually watch the programme) said "perhaps he's gay"

Family Affairs was somewhere in the middle really - an older audience than Hollyoaks but I'd say it appealed to a younger audience than the big three.

I know I've mentioned this before, but basically what Hollyoaks needed to do to capture some of these viewers is introduce some stronger older characters in their 20s/30s - which the producers have said numerous times they've aimed to do, and there has been a bit of evidence of that on screen, but not enough to make the difference really.

I think the best way to sell itself would be more promos, and a special week of episodes airing at 8.30pm (not with 6.30 ones as well).

I dont think that would work as it would clash with THe Bill and Holby City and other dramas on ITV.

Besides the show is more of an early evening show.

Its only for one week, not a perm fixture.

8.30pm wouldn't work - the 11pm shows are a better way of promoting it.

I'd like to see them give it a boost though from a couple of it's popular shows.

I'm sure at Christmas Deal or No Deal will edge closer to primetime, so airing it at 5.45pm and then screening Hollyoaks straight after could get some people accidently watching, and doing the same thing with some late night episodes on the back of Big Brother too.

As I've been saying for months though what it really does need is a major promo campaign.

I think the content is pretty much in the show already - they just need to make sure people know!

The last big campaign I can recall was when the Hunters joined Hollyoaks at least five or six years ago with Dan and Lisa (plus other ads with other characters).
