Another new character in the New Year in the form of Zak's never previously before mentioned sister, which handily lends itself to a storyline based around his problems with her disability.

Also Warren's never previously before mentioned foster-brother Spencer shows up before Christmas.

Back to the show though and unusually this time around the link between the late night episodes and regular show has been virtually non-existent. We saw Steph and Tom return at the end of Hollyoaks Later, but despite both Mandy and Cindy heavily featuring in the last couple of weeks, there's been no sighting of them at the flat and no mention of Tom being kidnapped!

So as always Hollyoaks is a bit all over the place at Christmas, with hour long shows on Monday and Tuesday at 6pm, a 30-minute show on Boxing Day at 5.50pm, then back at 6.30pm from Mon 29th - Wed 31st, with an hour long show at 6pm on Friday 2nd. E4 screens each episode a day early in the usual 7pm slot.

I say this for every soap but I think Hollyoaks especially could benefit from a Christmas break, ending on Christmas Eve with a cliffhanger and then returning after New Year.

As for New Year, here is what we can expect according to Brian Kirkwood:

What can we expect from the first part of 2009?
"Next year gets off with a bang as we blow Sarah and Zoe's late-night liaison out of the water. There was always a danger with that story that we'd re-tread the same ground that we did with John Paul and Craig. So we decided to play it completely differently. We started with a sexual encounter, which surprised everyone including the characters, and then we'll work in a completely different direction.

"This one's a story about Sarah. Long has both Loui and Sarah faced the criticism that she's there to react to everyone's situations, so 2009 will be the year where we see what she's capable of. She's an outstanding actress and it's about time that she had a storyline that puts her into focus. A girl who's always borne the brunt of other men's' decision-making and treatment of her is now a lost and slightly embittered girl who doesn't know her own mind. 2009 will see Sarah making her own decisions and taking control. I can't wait to see it.

"As I said, romance plays a big part in 2009, too. The key romance will be Justin and Hannah. We'll see them dancing around each other for quite some time. It's going to be an important relationship which sees them both running to escape their pasts. I've seen the first couple of scenes with them and you can see that their eyes are alive as they embark on this storyline. It's about time that both of them returned to the centre of the show.

"Also on the cards, Warren loses his grip and the walls begin to close in on in courtesy of Calvin; Theresa finds herself a pawn in Ste's game to win back Amy, while Amy faces a choice between good and evil - and evil's not necessarily who you'd expect it to be; Darren's released from prison and pledges to win the pub back (again!); there's a newbie in town who Steph falls head over heels for; and Ravi's secret is finally exposed."

A bit hit and miss this week Hollyoaks - the nativity stuff should really have been done earlier as it's not worked at all as the light relief to the wedding build up.

And as always at Christmas, the episodes are never quite combined in the right way, but the second of tonight's E4 double bill (which really should have been shown with the Boxing Day episode) was fantastic, especially the final scenes.

Which despite the leaks, had a twist at the end I wasn't expecting!

Looking forward to seeing more of Spencer and Warren too.

Tonight's C4 airing is at 5.50pm, with a first look at the usual time of 7pm on E4.

And it's a cracker of an episode -after a slow start to the week the two wedding episodes have been amongst the best of the year, and I'm still not 100% sure what actually happened as alot is left for the viewers to fill in the blanks.

Seem to be talking to myself on this page, but updated titles again for next week, with that purple background removed, several new characters added at last and a couple of shots from the Hollyoaks Later titles replacing some old shots:

And notably, Mandy has been removed suggesting she won't be returning after her surprise exit this week, so it must be back to Hollywood for Sarah Jane Dunn then. Or Doctors.

And a great show on E4 today going back to the idea of linking Newt, Ste and Warren's troubled backgrounds together - and I think Spencer and Warren are going to be much more watchable than Warren and Louise.

The old thread seems to have been archived, so I've started another one.

Does anyone know the name of the song played at the end of tonight's episode on E4? It's driving me mad trying to work out what it is Evil or Very Mad

Can we have that song in a sticky thread or something?

Just cos every bloody TV programme uses it and a lot of people request it/ask what it is!

Any chance of the archived thread being rescued. It seems a shame to lose it just because of a few weeks inactivity.

Been a poor couple of months by Hollyoaks standards but a half-decent episode tonight on E4 - the threesome storyline was quite funny tonight.

Also good to see:
The Sean Kennedy murder storyline creeping back into the show - although with both Justin and Warren leaving around the same time, I wish they'd gone for the option of putting it to trial rather than the rumoured fire at the Loft.

Rumours too that up to 10 of the cast will get the chop over the next few months It would be nice to have a complete new group of students in the autumn, especially as most of the current crop must have done 3-4 years with the show, and I think perhaps another new family to bring in some younger characters.

As for who should leave - actually nobody that really stands out as being a weak link at the moment IMO, but I think storyline wise we could probably do without the Barnes family (certainly Mike and Sarah), Russ and what's left of the Osbourne family.

I agree with Brekkie, the storylines in Hollyoaks of late have been poorer than we have become accustomed to.

The who's going to get Newt storyline has already overplayed, and I'm past caring if Carmel and Calvin get back together.

I think there's also a danger with all the storylines set in the comp that it's in danger of becoming a bit too Grange Hill-esque. ( Remember when Brookside took its funny turn when it decided to become a bit more like its Aussie counterparts, and Tony Dixon and his friends became a large feature of many episodes? )
