I'd guess the next few weeks are quite crucial for Hollyoaks, which so far this year has been disapointing.
There has been some high points - such as the search for Tom Cunningham and the climax of the racist bullying storyline, but otherwise it's just plodded through the year.
At the end of October Hollyoaks will celebrate it's 10th birthday - and this autumn is supposed to be getting a major revamp with a number of characters going to make way for fresh blondes (sorry, blood!)
Actually - perhaps it's no co-incident that ratings fell with the number of blondes! There mainly brunette nowadays!
And also, with Family Affairs going Hollyoaks will have the opportunity to capture a whole new audience, though I think they would have to introduce some stronger older characters to capitalise on this.
The show also desperately needs new titles (most people in them are long gone). They won't arrive this week (weren't on E4 Friday), so perhaps may co-incide with Let Loose the week after - or perhaps even be delayed till the 10th birthday in October once the new students are in!
Anyway, moving on:
Hollyoaks: Crossing the Lines airs each night this week on C4 at 11pm, with date rape set to be at the centre of the storyline.
What I'm wondering though is how will this affect the First Look editions on E4. Will the episodes refer to the late-night editions, which wouldn't have aired if your watching on E4. The listings suggests no cross-over until Friday, so Thursdays E4 episode may be a spoiler.
The week after a new E4 spin-off Hollyoaks: Let Loose begins on Mondays at 9pm. Ben and Lisa are at the centre of this, moving away from Hollyoaks to live the city life. The thing is these characters are no where near as popular as they once were - and from the brief glimpses of the new characters set to join them, they don't seem that watchable either!
So it should be an interesting few months for Hollyoaks - and hopefully it'll come through it alot better.
It's easy to diss Hollyoaks - but as a regular viewer I would say when it's at it's best, it is far superior to the other soaps. The problem is though it's not been at it's best at all over recent months!
However, as the only British teen drama currently on TV it's got it's place!
Question: has anyone got the details of how many late-night spin-offs and videos there have been of Hollyoaks?
P.S. Noticed on the Mersey TV website that the next series of Grange Hill will premiere on the CBBC channel airing everynight from November, before airing in it's twice-weekly BBC1 slots early next year.
