This programme is one I never used to watch, but my girlfriend who is an avid viewer, always has it on - it's usually just starting as i come home.

anyway, what can i say? i have never seen so much adolescent drivel in all my life. the story lines are pathetic, in fact, i've yet to really work out what the show is really about.

when i see this, i can't say i'm at all shocked that brookside finished. was the other redmond production as bad as this?

i'm fascinated, how do programmes like this keep going? that whole storyline with the teacher who's got a stalker boy is amazingly cringeworthy. she spends more time talking to random people than actully doing something about it. i can't work it out.

just don't get me started on 'enders and dennis.

You only have to read some of the forums i go on to understand why it's still going. The show gets a lot of attention because it has loads of fit blonde girls in it. Whenever you see a topic on a forum about Hollyoaks, it's not about the storylines, it's talking about how whats-her-name got her kit off this week. Ever wondered why the late night ones are so popular?

Channel 4 keep it going i'm guessing because all students watch it, plus they can sell off the Hollyoaks Babes calendars to adolescent blokes with no girl of their own lol

Hollyoaks used to be a decent soap with good storylines and characters, but this past year its become terrible.

I've only ever watched one episode, but thats because we had to for our Media Studies lesson, which was shown before Christmas last year and I have to say it was a big pile of crap is putting it nicely. But even towards the end Brookside wasn't that bad, there was more to that than fit birds. Laughing

Seriously, if Hollyoaks blondes were suddenly all replaced with brunettes would ratings suffer? I remember reading that ratings for felicity plunged after keri russell cut her hair short, so perhaps its a real possibility.

Q: Why is Hollyoaks called Hollyoaks?
A: Because it's so wooden, it had to be named after two trees.

Hollyoaks is no where near top form - but a revamp is around the corner.

It's still though the highest rated non-news programme in the 6.30pm slot - plus does well on Sunday mornings.

It's got it fans because it doesn't take itself to seriously and can incorporate comedy well to illustrate the more mundane everyday events.

It also does drama very well - you won't see a better soap story this year than Tom Cunningham going missing, and last year's story surrounding the death of Bombhead's mum (and earlier, Mr & Mrs C) were well above anything tried by the big soaps.

From a comedic point of view, the style of Hollyoaks and Grange Hill are actually quite similar. Whereas Grange Hill prior to 2003 could be quite dark and issue-laden; it has now gone the other way.

But Hollyoaks does prove it can tackle serious issues, such as self-harming and alcoholism.
