Holding Slides

Holding slides are becoming scarse, but not impossible to find. (July 2010)

Yes, we used shedloads of slides in the 80s. In fact most of the continuity was done over slides, especially the notorious "Building by Day" and "Building by Night" slides of the Cowcaddens studios.

Thanks Tony - now you mention it I do remember those particular slides!

Just saw another holding slide on BBC Two with the revised format. It is the same style as the trailers, with the large angled 2 on the left hand side of the screen. The colours are the viridian (???) blue used for the box ident as the background with a white box logo and viridian letters (In Avenir I believe).

At BBC Scotland was called them "crash captions" because they'd be used if the programme crashed. Now we generally use the Emergency Disc, which is a separate source continually running the animated apology caption and music.
Doesn't it come from a GeeVS server these days? (I know that Red Bee use those for their breakdown slides)

This may be the first appearance of the revised slide design outside of the (former) Schools hours:

That's the second appearance, for this month at least - more than a week prior, they were promoting Rigoletto using the same slide design, presumably due to the performance being live. By the usual standards, BBC One's slide got generous airtime just recently too, for A Concert For Heroes.

As long as situations exist where use of a trail is not possible for a programme that warrants being promoted, I would think these slides will continue to serve a key function for a while yet - they may be a secondary option to trails in every case, but as they are generally shown out of necessity now, their use seems quite justified.

Ive also noticed that they have been appearing more often. Recently I've been noticing that on South Today they have been advertising their special programmes on the show using regional BBC One captions. Any copies???

Also, and known existence of regional BBC Two idents/promotions even holding slides???
