Holding slides are becoming scarse, but not impossible to find. (July 2010)

Excellent! I imagine most of those slides are ones created for local ads which the CA voiced live, which UTV were still running as late as the mid 1990s.

From what I remember, UTV used unbranded programme slides produced by other companies (I have some off-air examples which were sourced from Thames) and very rarely produced ones for their own productions (I've yet to come across any examples) until they began producing their own computer generated ones around 1988.

Actually, from memory I think some of them ARE branded - I'll have a look & post some examples if they are..

My humble opinion - there is still a place for these slides on occasion. I always liked the way they were 'dressed up' at Christmas time for example to fit in with the seasonal ident.

TVS (in common with other ITV companies) would show Channel 4's slides (1982 to 88ish versions) in cross promotional junctions. However they copied the style and font for their own TVS ones. The 4 logo was always top right, and caption top left

TVS stuck their logo top left, and caption top right.

I remember during the early 1980s when BBC Two Scotland opted out for " Prosbaig ", a Gaelic programme they had a very crude holding slide with the then ident and Scotland printed below it.

I think the Back at 11am message on Film4 is a Holding Slide. You see it at around 9:50am on Freeview Razz

Out of interest, what is the official term that was used for this style of slide
http://hub.tv-ark.org.uk/images/bbcone/images_cont/1985/slides/bbc1_pebblemill_1985.jpg
(from TV-Ark who also call it a holding slide)

In the BBC network galleries an image like that would often have been referred to as a Backing Slide, as once the programme (Pebble Mill in this case) was on air, the announcer would put that slide onto his mixer output to act as a backup source, so that if the show went down the Pres operator simply had to put the sound and vision from the announcer's mixer to air. Then the operator could get on with chasing the fault, while the announcer could fill with apologies and music without needing assistance from the main gallery.

At BBC Scotland was called them "crash captions" because they'd be used if the programme crashed. Now we generally use the Emergency Disc, which is a separate source continually running the animated apology caption and music.

BTW if anybody is looking for old ITV programme slides I have three supermarket bags full of the things!

That's because in those days there was only one pres suite in Glasgow, and if it was in use for BBC One Scotland (or BBC Scotland on One!) the BBC2 opt would come from a studio gallery. Facilities were limited and the studio gallery didn't have the flexibility a pres suite had. Later we built a separate suite for BBC2, and in true BBC tradition, the BBC-1 suite was Pres 2, and the BBC-2 suite was Pres 1!!

Hi Tony - did Scottish TV use these slides much in the 1980's? I have footage on my Youtube Channel from the 1990's but don't remember much about them beforehand.

Yes, we used shedloads of slides in the 80s. In fact most of the continuity was done over slides, especially the notorious "Building by Day" and "Building by Night" slides of the Cowcaddens studios.
