could it be getting a fed of some other channel?

I've seen many occasions where the DOG Generator for whatever reason doesn't kick in, but after the break it works again. I saw it happen on E4 once during Scrubs, DOG wasn't there during first part, but returned after the break.

Yep, and I can remember some cock up once a few years ago when MTV Base was carrying a (dogless) VH1 Clasic feed for about 25 mintues, bet somebody got sacked over that one.

Music channels seem to have pretty unstable graphics - presumably their dynamic nature leaves them more open to spectacularly crapping out.

Was annoyed by The Hits this morning.
Was taping a themed "Top 20 Mummy's Boys" that was on at 9am - 10:30am, and a surprisingly high number of songs were played in one chunk (at least 5 I think), without a commercial break. Then the going-into-a-commercial-break animation played - but was followed by another song ("U Remind Me" by Usher)!!!
I always press pause when I'm recording, to miss out commercials. So, it mucked around with my recording plans.
There had been a DOG and graphics during the countdown, but none during this "extra song". So, when it first started, I though it was an advert, so didn't resume my recording. By the time I realised, I'd missed a fair chunk of the song.
The song was then followed by the going - into -a-commercial-break animation (again!), then an actual ad break. I wasn't entirely sure whether the graphic-less song was meant to count as part of the countdown. But when the countdown resumed (with DOG and graphics back) after the adverts, the "chart number" in the bottom left indicated that the Usher song was indeed part of the countdown.
Annoying!

Isn't there a general "hit tape" backup that plays behind other compilations in case they fail?
