I would also avoid AVI, while it is just a container, it's an old limited one. The two key issues with AVI is that it doesn't support aspect ratio information, and struggles with some variable bitrate codecs. I wasn't designed for the newer codecs that like to reference frames in the future either, a feature of H.264, and therefore it's implementation is a bit non standard and flaky.
