I'll hear hear that. I use VCRs to distribute SCART feeds to many receivers for low-tech requirements.
You can probably get a used VCR on eBay for £5. Even if it says "spares or repairs" it's likely only to have a broken drum, head or tape mechanism: the RF bits will work fine.
Alternatively buy yourself a better freeview box or do the obvious and get a TV that accepts a SCART component signal - it'll be the best quality picture you can squeeze out of domestic SD digital signals.
