Angus apologised for the technical problems, though when they initially returned you could see technical crew in the wide shot. I assume they used the wide shot during the breakdown so that the gallery or similar could see what was going on.

It looked like ITV1 threw back to the Hell's Kitchen gallery as soon as they got the feed back, which the gallery wasn't expecting, hence them being on a shot of a cameraman wandering around and the awkward pause. Very poorly handled by ITV / Red Bee and the announcer, there was a good 5 minutes of the ITV slide, no doubt they lost the casual viewer.

Yet another apology from the announcer! She can't stop! She said she hoped it didn't spoil the viewing! Laughing

That's what they all say at the end of a programme that's suffered problems - I've heard the Beeb do it too... must be a standard RedBee script - but then there's not a lot else you can say really!

Why would ITV1 have 'standard Red Bee script' - it's not run by Red Bee...

Plus it showed the need for live continuity.

I thought the opposite, the woman doing the continuity fell over her words and made up stupid sentences that were bad English and didn't tell us anything (she probably didn't know anything about the problem to be fair to her).

On this occasion, a pre-recorded loop of music with someone saying 'Do not adjust your set' or similar every 30 seconds would have done a better job than live continuity tonight.

Don't get me wrong, speaking as a member of TVForum I find these things much more interesting when there is a live announcer on duty, but speaking as a TV viewer I couldn't care less.

Having watched this, then the sound outage that plagued This Morning, I get the increasing impression that ITV1's announcers are being told what they can and cannot say in particular situations - noteably breakdowns and last-minute programme changes - and it sort of defeats the object of them being there. Paul Jamieson, despite being live during This Morning's problems, robotically kept saying "we're having a few problems at the moment" rather than at least trying to ad-lib.

In the case of last night's problems, the anno initially refer to "the programme" before subsequently referring to Hell's Kitchen by title, and I think she handled things better. The gallery would have been keeping her up to date in her ear but even the most experienced anno would appear to bumble in this situation.

A pre-recorded loop - especially a fixed piece of music - would only further depersonalise our characteristic approach to TV presentation.

I was about to ask the very same. I thought all ITV continuity came from LWT/South Bank/Upper Ground/London Studios/London Television Centre building?

RedBee only do BBC and UKTV channels to my knowledge?

Don't know if anyone else noticed, but I'm pretty sure that instead of the outage making the programme run late, they appeared to cut the package where the maitre'd read out diners' responses. It had been blurbed before the penultimate break with Marco congratulating Anneka on 'finally getting something right'! It never appeared after the break though.

Yeh we did miss that out. The show is on for 90minutes tonight so hopefully that can slot the last part in at the start. Someone who works on the show posted on digitalspy saying that Brian and Jim had a big row last night

Just been reading the Hell's Kitchen thread on DS, and apparently there was a problem with the satellite truck which caused the blackout, hence why ITV1 has to put the caption up.

Brian is sensitive. I absolutely hate Jim! He is a disgusting, vile, homophobic, sexist excuse for a human being.

I think reality shows need to have 'bullying' now. Brian wants to be the Shilpa Shetti of Hell's Kitchen.

What a ludicrous thing to say.

Jim's been thrown out.
