The link below is to an article on the Guardian Media web site that suggests that BBC One controller Lorraine Heggessey is being tipped to replace Peter Fincham as chief executive of Talkback Thames. If this was to happen it could lead to a new controller of the channel eventually replacing the Dancer idents.

Why is it that everyone here think that the primary role of the controller of BBC1 involves the idents?

They are a very minor part of the job and not the sole responsibility of the controller

Granted it isn't the main thing for a channel controller to do, but she admitted that she hated and wanted out with the Balloons, it was also the same woman who likes the PC idents we currently have, she wanted out with the globe and she made it no secret.

She is a very odd and somewhat arrogant woman, as mulder said she was on some programme the other morning saying, let us have it our way. Her finest moment was when she had to make an in-vision announcement to explain why Richard Bacon had been saked from Blue Peter.

I've worked with and for Lorraine - and one thing that has always really annoyed me about this board is how much personal invective is aimed at her.

She's a great person to work with, an excellent manager, and a very good, instinctive programme maker.

Personally - and just like the other views expressed here it is a personal opinion - I think BBC One is a much more confident and coherent channel than it was when Lorraine took over. I think the channel was far weaker under Salmon (and Yentob before him?)

Yes - lots of people liked the globe idents. Yes - people don't like the dancer idents - but it is her job to do what she thinks is best for the channel and she did just that.

Personally - I think the renaissance in popular drama has been a major achievement, and comparing BBC One with ITV1 the current BBC One schedule is far more diverse and has far more texture...

As others have said, the reversal of the obsession with Docusoaps that prevailed under Peter Salmon was a positive change for many.

She obviously dosen't think about idents much then! This is probably how they got made:
"Oh,do we need idents?Well,we've only got till 29th march so lets just stick any trash on.Let's have people breakdancing then."
That's probably how they made them!

The Docu soaps may have gone, but ONLY because the formatt has died. They have been replaced by Soap Opera's, Holby City (going from a decent returning drama to a soap opera) Casulaty (all year round) fourth episode of Eastenders which seems to have destroyed the quality of the soap. Comedy on the channel is a disaster with its only success coming (except My Family ratings wise) from other BBC channels. Panorama seems to have died a death and been replaced by 'Real Story with Fiona Bruce'. it all seems to be about ratings- which it shouldn't, it should be about quality.

She is unpopular on this board because people come here due to an interest in television presentation, perhaps more than the programmes themselves; she made her dislike for the balloon idents known almost as soon as she got the job, and replacing these idents which were liked my many and replacing them with the absolute rubbish we have now which are still hated even after three years, is hardly going to make her a popular figure round here. (I still think that under a different controller we would not seen the balloon ditched at the time it was).

In contrast, on the Doctor Who boards at Outpost Gallifrey she is known as 'Dame Lorraine' for bringing the programme back! (By the way this is undoubtably the best decision she has ever made).

Although the 'docusoap era' was certainly not a high point, I don't think BBC1 is much better now; there are far too many lifestyle and holiday programmes in primetime, and most documentaries on the channel seem to be aimed at simpletons - for example, take Alan Titchmarsh's Natural History of Britain programme, and compare it to the last time BBC1 did a natural history series, Julian Pettifer's The Living Isles in 1986 - and tell me television has not become more dumbed down.

I dont think Lorraine has done a bad job of BBC One. Granted i dont like the channels presentation but then as has been pointed out, thats a very minor part of her job. It cant be easy trying to please god knows how many millions of people everyday by showing something for everyone. And like all other BBC Staff i doubt she just works 9-5. She will have to keep a constant eye on ITV1, Channel 4 & Five (and many more channels) to make sure BBC One is doing itself justice. Its certainly not a job i could do.

I disagree; I think BBC ONE was worse under Peter Salmon - wall-to-wall docusoaps.

And look what happened to him, there aren't many former channel controllers that went backwards into running a production department. But he's certainly found his niche in BBC Sport - it's doing rather well

Lorraine hasn't done that bad a job. Although she invented crap idents, the programming hasn't been too bad. I do think BBC One need a new controller to bring fresh things in (and new idents please!! Razz ).

Of course I realise that the remit of being controller of BBC One is more than the presentation of the channel – It must be a very small aspect. But as the forum is primarily concerned with TV presentation, I commented on the article in that context.

Your views are shared by many, including myself and a commons select committee. I remember a time when I could watch a Doc, followed by NCS Manhunt, a brilliant drama and then after the news One foot in the grave.
And although I have no person experience of Ms Heggessey she is the controller of an increasingly ratings driven BBC ONE. But this then comes down to the question what is the purpose of BBC ONE, should it chase ratings or should it be a mix of all things? Once this question is amswered by the Beeb we may finally see a coherent channel output, and it is this question which BBC ONE seems to have trouble answering is it serious? (Panorama) Or Comedy (My Family) Or "Entertainment" (Fame Adcad)
Any new controller will need to address these issues most formost. Oh that and The National News Backdrop.

And people are complaining about ITV1! At least they had the decency to axe the celebs. But one small problem:the tapes still exist,so they could return at any time.Unless we burn the tapes!

Going back to the thread... Very Happy

I haven't been impressed by her at BBC 1 but in general all have gone downhill of recent

Even the once mighty Thames, which is a former shadow of itself.

To be honest I don't think she will do much damaged to Thames, Carlton already did that Very Happy
