To be fair it had run it's course, 18 years of the 60's was going to get stale after a while. However this is just yet another programme of which ITV will try to replace with something, declare the replacement crap & then put some random old sh*te in it's place. Kingdom & Wire In The Blood still had life in them each and yet both were unnecessarily cancelled. I do wonder how much longer Doc Martin has before ITV declares that it "doesn't fit in with their current plans"?

To be fair if Doc Martin sustains it's ratings they'll have no reason to cancel it. Kingdom didn't - and possibly more crucially it didn't repeat too well too, so that was an understandable decision.

Where The Heart Is did well in the ratings, right up until it was axed (as I recall?). I would hope the same fate doesn't befall Doc Martin...

Its not always about the ratings tho - if a show has run its course it has run its course IMO. There are only so many storylines a show can have and its better for some to go out on a high rather than a low.

I thought WTHI hadn't run out of steam, but what do I know. However "running its course" is often a euphemism for cost-cutting (TOTP is arguably an example of that, or The Bill or Spooks). I'd said Midsomer Murders had run its course (only so many murders you can have in somwhere like Midsomer :lol), but its ratings are high, so it remains. Indeed a rpt of Midsomer Murders manage to beat Big Brother the other night, AIUI!

I think there's still some mileage in Doc Martin though, still room for development. I agree Heartbeat was getting daft after being in 1969 since about 2000! However axing a popular drama for running its course is one thing, but what equally popular drama will ITV replace it with? It's sad to think all ITV has these days is two stalwart soaps and Cowelloke, in terms of rating-winners.

I think Cowellmania is beginning to lose it's steam now, BGT didn't do half as well as expected, and with Cowell concentrating on X Factor USA, I think BGT may be dropped
