So it isn't just me - the filmic effect has gone!
I believe this is completely appropriate given the show is set in 1969 - the same year colour came to ITV and BBC1 and at which time some dramas were starting to shoot exteriors on colour VT. In that respect, it adds to the authenticity, though perhaps we should draw a line at adding faux 2" Quad dropouts...

I don't think it's a "raw" episode. There were all sorts of odd things in it that weren't just a lack of post-production - the actual shot selection was very strange, with weird panning shots, close-ups and a truly awful, suspension-of-disbelief-shattering sequence shot as if from a moving motorbike.
Whoever said it looked like a cheap show from the 1980s was right - I wondered if it might be a homage to something like Juliet Bravo (after all, it was quite a Dawson-centred episode). But the "next time" preview looked the same, unfortunately.

Could a 'raw' episode have made it to transmission ? - seems odd to change the film style half way through the series.

It was a "raw" version, that was shown by mistake - next week's episode will be back to the usual format (and look). ITV only realised what had happened when last night's episode was aired.
