Long-running Sunday night drama Where The Heart Is has been axed after 10 years on screen.

Despite average ratings of over 6 million viewers, ITV has made the decision not to recommission the Yorkshire-based programme to make way for "new programme ideas" for its timeslot.

Over the years, the programme has played host to big names such as Sarah Lancashire, Pam Ferris, Denise Van Outen, Brian Capron, Philip Middlemiss and, more recently, Shobna Gulati.

An ITV spokeswoman said: "Where The Heart Is has been a very successful series for ITV1. But the decision has been taken in order to create some flexibility for new programme ideas in that 8pm Sunday slot alongside Heartbeat, The Royal and Wild At Heart."

Producer Ian Hopkins added: "I am sorry to have to announce that Where The Heart Is has been cancelled. I would like to thank you for all your support for the programme over the last 10 years."

Well I cant say im surprised. It isnt anywhere near as good as it was at the start. 10 years isnt a bad run.

So they are going to be replacing it with more Heartbeat, Wild at Heart and The Royal then.

It had run it's course, but so has Heartbeat!

I'm sure if ITV commission something to replace it most viewers won't notice the difference!

I'm pleased its finished it was becoming nauseating with just ex-soap actors.

It was ex-soap actors from the word go wasn't it?

Can't say I'll be sad to see it go. One less bland, cosy Sunday-night crapathon to deal with.

Oh dear Embarassed I couldn't stand Wild at Heart . I thought it was duller than Heartbeat ! Acting in it was worse than Heartbeat . Heartbeat still gets high ratings, ITV's third most popular programme (after Coro and Emmerdale I think?). It makes me laugh how its managed to stay stuck in 1969 even after numerous Christmas episodes!! Shocked

I loved Where The Heart Is , it was wonderfully depressing. Laughing It did get saturated by ex-soap actors though, I agree. Still performed well in ratings I thought, despite sliding a bit? I should imagine Heartbeat will get an extended run.

It is nice to watch Heartbeat, The Royal and Where the Heart Is ; it is good to have dramas that aren't bleak, violent, gritty, foul-mouthed shag-fests!! :lol

I never did quite get to the bottom of what Where The Heart is was all about (although admittedly I didn't watch it willingly, it was always something on in the background if anything). At least with Heartbeat or The Royal there is some point to them. WTHI if anything just seemed like STV's Take The High Road, in that it was set in a small town where nothing much happened Laughing Why do people watch sleepy dramas like this?

This show to me reflects all that has been wrong with ITV drama in recent years, writ large. No originality, safe, predictable and boring, with a load of ex-soap stars littering the cast list.
