I think the fact is, nothing will ever beat Spitting Image.
I am with you on that... I think the latex puppets had a certain grotesque charm about them, that computer-animated effigies don't-- the latter is more clinical somehow.
While I agree that nothing will beat the first few series of
Spitting Image
, the first outing for
Headcases
certainly had me howling with laughter. I watched it again last night and laughed just as much!
If it continues with good writers it could become as popular and influential as
Spitting Image
was: it certainly had an effect on the careers of a few politicians and celebrities of the time.
Gordon Brown's image as a Dickensian miser probably isn't too far from people's perception of him anyway, so this caricature fuels a negative image. I can just imagine the "We're doomed" label being firmly attached to Alistair Darling
The Robert Mugabe skit was inspired. I hope it gets to be shown down "zimbab...zimbab...way" sometime in the future
Saw it a few minutes ago on the ITV website thought William and Harry were good and I did think it was funny that Mohammed Al-Fayed reckoned that a Fiat Uno crashed into the Titanic. Didn't think it was as good as last week's to be honest.
I think it''s rubbish. If it wants to be the new Spitting Image it needs to go a bit further then every other impression show. It's far too tame at the minute.

The thing about SI was, it went for the jugular most of the time-- real biting satire. The Thatcher's vegetables sketch sums up how she (was to perceived to) treat her cabinet, for instance.
I watched Headcases last night, and I was underwhelmed. The Al-Fayed sketch was inspired, but the rest of it was tame I agree. They could have done something for more subversive with Robert Mugabe and Mucca.
The impressions and the animation is pretty good, but it looks like they've concentrated on these rather than the writing. Very predictable and obvious humour, didn't watch it for long enough to check the writing credits
