Yep - though that does mean that 4m viewers can upgrade to Freeview HD with nothing more than a set-top box if they are in the reception area. No need for a dish, subscription etc.

If you want subscription-free HD, then Freeview HD is a more exciting prospect than Freesat HD, as you get all three main terrestrials' (with Five following) HD offerings.

Now if only the boxes were out there... But that is always the chicken and egg situation - it took ages to get OnDigital boxes into the shops as well - and there was a huge waiting list for Sky HD when it launched (such that some people who had bought it for the World Cup in 2006 didn't get it installed until the tournament was over)

Tesco will start to see Freeview HD boxes on the shelves in the next few weeks.

Nick Lansley's Blog reads:

Freeview HD signal turned on in London - Tesco Freeview HD boxes on their way

Just a quick note to let you know that yesterday, the high definition TV signal (so-called "Freeview HD") was switched on in London - more about this here.

I have learned that Tesco has placed its first orders for Freeview HD boxes to be shipped from the manufacturers so they will be arriving on Tesco shelves in the next few weeks. The simple reason for the time it will take is because only from yesterday could Tesco and its electronics suppliers confirm that prototype set-top boxes and Freeview HD TVs will work with the new DVB-T2 signal being broadcast from the mighty Crystal Palace transmitter.

You can't beat a working live production-quality TV signal to check that everything is OK...!
