HBO are to launch a Video-On-Demand service in the UK available via Virgin Media, BT Vision and Tiscali TV.

Programming from the HBO archives will include The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, Angels in America and Band of Brothers.

The question is how will this hit existing UK broadcasters - and could other US companies use Video on Demand as a foot hold into the UK market.

The bulk of HBO shows over the years have been part of the C4 schedules, though in recent years Sky has had first pick of their top programming.

Though there is no suggestion that shows would premiere on HBO's own VoD service, considering broadcasters are looking towards Video On Demand to fill funding gaps, the loss of some big US shows could still hit them in the pocket.

This is fantastic news for us cable subscribers, they could put the barker channel to HBO on the ex Sky One channel (120 I think).

The caption could go something along the lines of...

Quote:
"Virgin our proud to announce that HBO, the US premier TV production company have chosen to launch their HBO On demand service for all you lucky Virgin Media customers.

To make room for all this content we chose to get rid of a number of poor performing channels

Now press red and enjoy!"

I could see a number of US companies using VOD to sell programs that aren't mainstream enough for the main TV channels but would do well enough to cover costs, increase revenue and make their brand more well know in the UK.

I wonder what package it will be on, hope it's the L o XL package
