You seem to be working under the false assumption that ITV were going to do it up north by default. It's not as if the show had any significant connection to Manchester.

Not so much an assumption, more of a hope that they'd stick with the tradition of it being produced in the North West.

On your second point, Stars In Their Eyes did to some extent have a siginifcant connection to Manchester, as that's where the orignal series was produced for it's entire run. The voiceover in the opening titles always announced "From Granada, Manchester, it's Stars In Their Eyes!" Indeed the voiceover was also one of Granada's continuity announcers at the time. It would be nice if they'd at least considered doing the new series at MediaCity UK

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they rope Peter Dickson in to be the announcer.

I'm not too sure, most ITV voiceover announcer these days are young(ish) talent, GMB, Loose Women, ITV News etc. Other than BGT/X Factor, I don't think they have any loud or shouty voiceover announcers for their shows. Even their CA's are young(ish), but not to recognisable.

We tried to use him for something in work and he charges too separate rates for his regular voice and his X Factor voice! You can guess which one is significantly more expensive.

I can't say i remember that announcement in the titles. Maybe the odd appearance of the Granada building on the final, but it didn't really add anything more to the show than if it had been TLS or any other studio.

Being filmed in Manchester was hardly a tradition. It was merely where Granada's production house was based, and they made the programme. I think maybe it meant more to you than the average viewer.

Incidentally, I wrote to him during my A Levels back in 2007 when X Factor was still relatively in its infancy to do a voiceover for my media studies project. He did 5 minutes worth then did another 5 minutes in 2008. All for free. I expect he gets so many requests these days that he is making hay while the sun shines.

It could be argued that he wouldn't be where he is had Patrick Allen not died (Peter picked up Patrick's E4 gig after his death, with what was basically an impersonation) but I get the feeling that Peter is a decent bloke from what I see on Twitter and elsewhere.

I'm not sure the E4 voice he did was on a par with The X Factor one? More funny than booming.

It wasn't every series that had that particular opening announcement, it was more from 1993 up until ITV started to phase out the ITV regions, including Granada in the late 1990's. Basically it was on several series from when Matthew Kelly took over as host.

Peter was the voice over on a 1994 episode of Bruce's Price is Right on Challenge the other night and you wouldn't have recognised him.

Stars in their Eyes promo just aired on ITV.

The star has been stylised as a spaceship and I'm pleased to say they're retained the original theme albeit re-recorded.

He was the VoiceOver on all those episodes, plus he used to do the VoiceOver on the Paul O'Grady show and he wasn't loud and shouty there either.
