I'm guessing the aim is to avoid the schedule clash, which was putting Stars in the Eyes directly against The Voice. It never really made sense scheduling what is technically a singing contest against another singing contest. Presumably they're hoping that once those tune in they won't switch over to BBC1 at 7pm.

The thing is though, is it a singing contest? I'm actually quite confused as to what the show is trying to be.

Putting it up against The Voice, It was never ever going to beat that which I think is a big mistake on ITV's part. But this is whether they view it as a comedy or a singing contest, as personally I don't truly believe this show is about the singing at all.

It feels like a Harry Hill comedy show with impersonation singers giving serious performances shoehorned in, and that is why I really don't believe this series can work as it is because the viewers are confused as to what the actual focus of the show is.

Whether they'd played it straight or not putting it against The Voice was never a problem IMO. As it is it's a comedy show against it, while had they played it straight it would be a classic entertainment show against a current talent show nobody is really that fond of.

Harry Hill's Stars in their Eyes is failing because it's a mess, not because it's up against The Voice.

What if the ratings go up for this week?

The only thing they could do is stick Sunday Night at the Palladium on a Saturday night and change the format slightly but it wouldn't be 'edge of seat' style entertainment which is what the viewer craves these days.

As much as I love variety and as much as I enjoyed the Palladium, I can't help but think it would die on its behind if it was scheduled on a Saturday night unless it featured buzzers David Walliams feeling up Simon Cowell in front of the stage.

ITV would be happy; there would be some red faces on this forum.

If they went up a couple of hundred thousand, they're still dismal figures.

If they went up a couple of million, it would be a miracle.

Stars in Their Eyes is being moved 30 minutes earlier to 6.30pm from Saturday 31st January. It basically swaps with clip show 'Planet's Got Talent' which moves to 7.30pm. Desperate times when a clip show becomes the centre of your Saturday night line-up. Saturday Night Takeaway can't start soon enough.

I've said all along Stars was doomed due to it's timeslot. They should've put it on an hour later, avoiding The Voice entirely, or shown it later in the year instead.

Apparently the 'not live' final is being filmed this coming Saturday according to the latest e-mail I got from applause store.

This show says a lot about the current state of ITV entertainment commissioning. A lot of this series has been unacceptably poor, as have a number of other recent new series like Get Your Act Together, Celebrity Squares and Keep It In the Family. Tired ideas and weak formats that would have been quite obviously poor in the development stage are getting the ratings they deserve. Hopefully there'll be a commissioning cull very soon, it's sad to see ITV in this state.

Well if nothing else it's moving away from being TV Burp in new clothes. I think that's a good thing. I wasn't expecting in all honesty the style of show that was prevail in the Leslie Crowther/Matthew Kelly days - with Hill it was never going to be like that.

If a second series does happen next year, I think what we saw tonight is probably the best of both worlds. It's not too over the top, it's not full of random sketches, it has comedic moments in the style of Hill but it's not deadly serious either - a lot of what went on in the first episode is curtailed for the better IMO.

Speak for yourself. I don't think Celebrity Squares was a failure and I really enjoyed Keep It In The Family.
