The Cat Deeley era was bland not because of the show itself but because of the rise in reaction television such as X Factor and Simon Cowell. A little 2 minute edited VT package of Bob in Scarborough before he became George Michael is different to following Bob in Scarborough's journey over 12 or so weeks as different artists which is what people wanted and got more out of. In my opinion, you could never bring it back as a straightforward 'cabaret' contest like it once was but equally you can't try and cheese it up with a silly comedian such as Harry Hill as has been proved so far but you can see where ITV were trying to go with this.

Revamped Through the Keyhole works because it can get away with being scripted, you can't script singing and performances from regular members of the public.

Partly, but you also have to factor in that Matthew Kelly was a great all rounder with appeal across the demographics. Cat Deeley is a solid presenter, but the problem with solid presenters is you rarely see any personality in their delivery.

I don't think there is anything wrong with Hill presenting in a surreal tone or being self deprecating towards the format. But there is perhaps a bit too much irrelevance to the format and too many sketches. Having said that I think the ratings for this revival could go either way despite the fact it'll get a poor critical reaction.
It was up against The Voice - so it was doomed from the start. Anyone who's interested in the music would be watching the other channel. I'll be surprised if Stars hasn't completely bombed.
And the first singer has already dropped the Tonight Matthew clanger. Although she's so far over the top in the intro VT it's hard to tell whether it was a genuine mistake or not Smile
Doesn't matter if anyone makes such a slip up - Harry's real name is Matthew Hall.

You don't have to be interested in music to watch those type of shows, as with The X Factor and the rest it's really all about entertainment value. What was quite refreshing about SITE for me was that it didn't take itself too seriously - which The Voice has always had a real problem with, ironically given how few stars it has actually produced.

On another note - it's interesting how Stars In Their Eyes was essentially replaced by Dancing On Ice on Saturday nights, and although it switched to Sundays in the interim Stars In Their Eyes is one of the shows helping to fill the void after Dancing On Ice came to an end.

I watched last night and was totally shocked and horrified at what Harry had done to the show, the titles were awful and the Pharrell performance by harry instantly made me switch to the voice.

However, Watching it back this morning it seems I was only turned off because of the rose tinted memories of a show i loved as a kid. its not actually that bad if you forget the old show and look at it as a totally new show. the cringe-worthy comedy just needs toning down a little, its really awful to watch. The highlight was defiantly the Mathew Kelly sketch at the beginning though.

Yeah, like Harry Hill was personally responsible for artistic direction and design of the opening titles...

If you're looking for a gameshow format which mixes surreal comedy perfectly. Shooting Stars. This isn't it.

Actually, you could draw a comparison to a Saturday night show they presented off the back of the unexpected popularity of Shooting Stars, Families at War. R&M were similarly hampered by the stricter format and early evening BBC1 audience. It was completely wrong for them and the programme is long forgotten, even if it did contain a final challenge of genius that remains unparalleled.

I can't describe myself as much of a Hill fan (and I haven't seen the final product to pass comment on) but I will say that the idea of a layered p1sstake of a format that used to take itself boringly serious from what I remember, placed early evening on Saturday on ITV , should've sent massive air raid sirens off somewhere.

They've also ruined the theme. It now sounds like lift music to me.

The closest the show originally dabbled in surreal humour is when they extended the opening titles in 1999 to show plasticine transformations.

Though I can see why it was dropped because it didn't really fit the premise of the show, at least that was relatable to the show. Brian Belo and a Bakery fight totally does not fit the show.

It was being repeated just now on one of the ITV Channels on +1 I think.

One minute he's talking to a singer who's going to perform an Eminem song and next minute Harry and said performer are jumping around in a kids play pen with Brian Belo. What's Brian got to do with the show?

I'm surprised Harry didn't manage to fit in the line: "Who's going to win tonight? There's only one way to find out!"
