My main gripe with this version of Stars in their Eyes is that I felt the comedy padded it out, not helped by the awful backstage acting from the contestants.
At least the audience voted for the right performer to go through to the final.

Yes and it obviously meant the world to her, which made the parody-style format all the more difficult to watch.
I think the problem is TV Burp saddled Harry Hill with a mainstream audiance that he's now struggling with. He's not trying to recreate TV Burp..... surrealism is what he's always done. This is much more akin to his 90's Channel 4 show and is really a deconstruction of naff shiny floor shows. It might be a tad too meta for a mainstream Saturday Night ITV audiance who'd prefer the real thing done seriously with Stephen Mulhern rather than a knowing surreal parody. "It won't change your life...but it won't ruin it either"
I never had high hopes for the revival. I like others have said, don't mind Harry, and liked TV Burp - but that was just an hour of really bad TV. Never laughed once, was going to change the channel, but wanted to give it a chance, see if it would get any better...it didn't.
People are saying "Bring back Matthew" - but i think the format is just out of place now, with The X Factor, The Voice, BGT, etc.
I don't think there is anything wrong with Hill presenting in a surreal tone or being self deprecating towards the format. But there is perhaps a bit too much irrelevance to the format and too many sketches. Having said that I think the ratings for this revival could go either way despite the fact it'll get a poor critical reaction.

Exactly what I was thinking, Stephen Mulhern. Did not like it, thought the opening with him singing was just awful. Music is now rubbish and the whole thing has been turned into a joke.
How much did ITV pay for that awful synth like keyboard arrangement of the theme I wonder? My 12 year old Niece could have done better and for a fraction of the cost! lol

I think that's the point, it's go go with the general 'surreal' & 'naffness' of this version. All part of the Harry Hill wit.
