BBC Parliament are having a Harold Wilson Night. Harold Wilson who is most famous for not being a very good television presenter will be presenting an episode of Friday Night, Saturday Morning which is the bit that I am looking forward to most. There is a bunch of other stuff too so if you have nothing better to do on 14th February this year, why not dress up as Harold Wilson and dance around your television set?

I hope all of this goes on iPlayer afterwards. I really want to see that chat show just to see how dreadful he was at hosting. I've seen plenty written about but no actual footage.

It's now known he was suffering from Alzheimers disease at the time, which makes it even more of a depressing viewing.

Yeah, although Iain Johnstone, for it was he, also suggested that, while he was booked for two shows, the first one was so bad they didn't do the second - although this does appear to be the second. The first was the truly awful one with Harry Secombe having to whistle while Harold thought of some more questions, but this is the other.

If you have other plans on Valentine's Day, all of this is being shown again on Saturday afternoon.

BBC Two - B2 - was rather fond of theme nights in the mid nineties (e.g. ATV) and early noughties (I Love 1970, 71 .. 79), but a theme night on BBC Parliament - B8 - (Harold Wilson Night) seems like something that would never happen.

I wonder how many people will watch Harold Wilson Night. Indeed does anyone watch BBC Parliament? I'd have thought it would be the least watched BBC channel. Maybe if they stuck Harold Wilson Night on BBC Two or even BBC Four it might attract more viewers.

I doubt if I'll bother watching any of Harold Wilson Night.

They've done a lot of archive-based theme nights on "B8" before, in fact for around a decade now. Take a look at B8's Wikipedia page (although it comes under the alias of "BBC Parliament" over there).

It's themed nights like these when I wish that they'd stick them on the HD channels. I mean, I know the orignal footage isn't the best to start off with, however it still improves the quality a bit. Just because the night was stuck on B8 doesn't mean it couldn't be simulcasted on B#. Hopefully when the BBC secure more HD capacity on Freeview (and after B2# has launched), B# will be able to show more themed programming from the smaller channels. Smile

Seems a bit of dodgy scheduling to put in on a Thursday, which is basically 'politics night' on BBC1.
