Cropping is a shame but this is just joyous TV.

Even more joyous if you can see the entire original picture.
I can live with them tacking the better known Mr Bean opening onto it and the EoPs, but zooming videotape and panning it is just horrible.

To answer the other question you posed as I refreshed before posting, oh I've already answered it. Yes they tacked the better known opening onto the first one. Originally that was only seen in black and white on the second episode and then as we know it now from the third.

See there's another case in point of cropping ruining the joke. The Cul-De-Sac sign is chopped off in the final shot. Mad

Does anybody agree that the credits work at the end of mr bean though when you see coming up next etc... which more shows had big end credits like that so where able to see them at the end when the continuity announcer is speaking

They weren't that big originally...

And we just had a random scene that was shown in 25p. This ‘remaster’ sure is great! (No I’m not talking about the stuff shot on film that’s on now)

Speaking of which, it looks like they haven’t actually remastered the film footage. Might not exist any more of course.

It's weird that Endemol Shine/Banijay don't seem to treat Mr Bean that well in terms of remastering.

Which is a wasted opportunity to add some kind of longevity by making it in HD. Certainly all of the outdoor scenes in the Thames era episodes (after the first two) were shot on film. Two episodes, in Room 426 and Mind the Baby are also shot entirely on film, which would all look good in HD, but the look would be inconsistent in comparison to the rest of the series.

It'll almost certainly be the cheaper remastering option. Crop it to death, dial up the sharpness, pan and scan it, job done. Might have no option actually if the original rushes don't exist. Probably limited by the fact the bulk of it was done on video (cheaper to do a "film on location, videotape in studio" style of production rather than doing the lot on one type), so it will never be HD. Upscaled/zoomed video always looks crap once you try to add detail that doesn't exist.

In an ideal world you'd go back to finding the original rushes and the original film and remaster it properly (and in 4:3). The DVDs are remastered, but still 4:3 and they do look better than when I saw them first time round in the 90s, but this mess what goes out on the ITV channels is just tragic.

Isn’t it a bit odd to be celebrating the 30th anniversary when in fact the episode that was just on was from 1989 so well over 30 years old?

Maybe not but it works better then credits nowadays cause u could read them you can't when they do it for like an episode of coronation street or any tv channel for that matter

Off topic but, that ITV promo. ‘Nothing but great content’. Did someone forget that viewers call them programmes, or shows?
