It's not a bit though, it's a quarter of the picture, and that's a lot. I personally find it very hard not to notice. Especially being somewhat of an amatur film maker myself it makes me feel stronger about it and notice it more.

In the vast majority of cases it isn't a quarter of the picture!

How about a special two that has a birthday cake wih '40' on it. Or prehaps a '2' that morphs into the previous '2's.

The could just use classic old idents and stick the purple BBC symbol on it. Or simply the '2' that flips the logo around and have it flip it around again to reveal a '40' like it does for BBC 4.

Or invisible walls but with the stripey two, TWO and the original one with the dot

It doesn't really make much difference. However it's done, it's still a big chunk of picture chopped off and even if nothing imporant is cut off, it totally screws up the appearance and framing of the image.

It's part of the "BBC TWO Spring & summer highlights 2004" press pack, which could mean ages yet. Or it hopefully could be the 20th of April.

Hopefully they'll show clips from this http://www.starfury.demon.co.uk/bbc2launch/

Wayhay, thanks for the link!

Let's just hope it's not in 16:9 cropporama, though it probabally will be, which means I won't be watching if it is.

Methinks you are cropping your nose to spite your face.

If the BBC are reading this, I'd like to see a different one of their classic idents with announcer (or without) - the stripes, the "2", the revolving tri-colour 2 etc. at the start of EACH celebratory prgramme on that evening. Now that would be good...

Yep, that would be ideal. It could also be cool if they got some widescreen versions made too...

I may have said this before but can we expect any new ident(s)?

It would be very easy to get widescreen verisions of the older idents as they had plain backgrounds (black, blue etc)

Remember that the older [B][B][C] TWO idents were the original 1991 BBC2 idents converted to widescreen (mostly by chopping the tops off)

But how? The '2' remained the same size on screen from 1991-2001. If the tops had been chopped off, the '2' would have become bigger.

I suspect the original 1991's were either filmed in 16:9, OR (much more likely) the bits at the side were added electronically in 1997.

The '2's' were slightly larger on screen, (notice how they made the base of the 2 the same width as the new logo)

When the original idents from this set were converted to widescreen that is exactly what happened.
