Whilst I don't disagree about the site needing a new look (and getting one soon - I've ploughed through more of the new site in the past few days than in a long time) I disagree that no-one uses GIF for non-transparent images. You wouldn't want to have a small text based logo design as a JPEG because of the compression/blur you'd get around the lines. As to PNG, there's definite benefits but not enough IMO to warrant the time converting over any existing GIFs. Few people would notice that difference.

Well yes, it does matter! Quality wise. But I was more on about the fact that no one uses .gifs for non-transparent images!

Of course it would be a GIF, they were commonplace a few years ago! There's no need to change them all, there wouldn't be much of a difference. And like Asa said, no point in changing GIF to PNG either!
It's been said many times that the new look will come with the new software.

I mean you are still using a .gif for the header when you could use .jpeg or a .png!
