Today 50 years ago Borders start broadcasting, while Grampian start at the end of the month completing ITV network in the UK mainland: What a far cry it has come,

Grampian: It is still unknow what there are doing, and I have even spoken with couple of people in Glasgow, and there had said it will be up to Aberdeen what is down. I get the feeling Aberdeen newsroom would have to go to glasgow and ask about making a 50th birthday programme.
again just for notice great wee channel about this: http://www.youtube.com/user/grampianstudios

Wow. Fifty years and you still can't call it by its actual name. Laughing

Thought Lookaround's 'special feature' was pretty grim.

Depressing stuff indeed. At least the paltry mini-series Tyne Tees got made a concerted effort to commemorate and bask in past achievements for that one week; a lot more than someone pointing at news clips and mummering "gosh how quaint".

Sad, very sad.

That really is dire, I do believe Grampian will at least do a whole weeks worth of Stv News North.

Its nice to see Melvyn Bragg, but when was he control of Border, I take it during the 1970s? I get the feeling he has some rose tinted glasses on.

According to this website: http://www.museum.tv/eotvsection.php?entrycode=braggmelvyn

* 1982-90; deputy chairman, Border Television,
* chairman, Border Television, Carlisle, since 1990. No end date?? I take it he left in 1995?

No, there was still one region on the mainland yet to open: WWN started in September 1962

As so little is left of Grampian - and practically nothing is left of Border - I wonder if it's better to see these occasions as the 50th anniversary of the start of commercial television in the Borders and the North East - not Grampian or Border's 50th birthday.

Have to say added to the above, the 50th Birthday feature was very poor. a wee 3 min report tucked in before the pan-regional.

Only thing of note from the article is that it openly mentioned about the merger between tyne tees and border. In Essence it was like: "Border was great in the region, but it was scaled down, we are just about still around.... who knows in the future"

Not quite sure were to put this, but this seems as good as any. Next Tuesday night at 11.35pm, Border actually gets a network opt-out to show a documentary on Scottish rugby

Guess this is either a STV show or an ITV4 repeat and only being shown because of the Rugby World Cup, but an opt-out anyway

Interesting. Is it being shown across the Border region (and not just the Scottish transmitters)? Are STV showing it too?
