Your sums, which I don't think are based on real figures (do they have 150,000 subscribers?!) don't take into account any *costs* of any kind!

You're right, my sums are speculative. I believe TopUpTv needed 300,000 customers to break even. I was under the impression that they had achieved that figure by reading about the service in various places. However, I believe that this figure has dropped off due to the stupidly tiny airtimes for some of the channels and in fairness to the limited amount of channels available.

Marksi, I realise you are a very intelligent, knowledgeable man so I'm not going to patronise you by trying to justify my figures and sums. I haven't taken into consideration costs because I was under the impression they would be as small as possible. For instance there are no sports deals like ITV digital had, there are no channels broadcasting so therefore no channel bands being occupied....only an electronic library of hand picked programmes every night from 19 channels. There will be minimal staffing costs as they don't have an army of engineers like Sky and NTL. They have a self funding customer call centre and with the exception of massive posage bills to distribute the boxes, the costs are minimal. Or at least I would assume they are.

In fairness though mate I don't know a great deal about how these things work so speculation is all I have to go on. I would very much appreciate it, if you have the knowledge, to enlighten me just incase I start making a right prat of myself!

Your comments are always taken on board and thought about so I do appreciate positive critisicm.

No, they needed 250,000, and reached that goal in June.

So they're not exactly broke then. Thanks very much for that info. How many of those will continue with Anytime though do you think?

I don't know, I was browsing around on wikipedia. I'd say like 75,000 will.

So my previous estimates were about right then. I predicted that 50,000 will take up the 75.00 pounds offer of a 12 month contract, 15,000 will continue with a 99.00 pounds offer and no contract and approx 15,000 new customers paying the full whack. Taking into consideration a minus of 30% to pay for the costs etc, it would seem then they may still be in a break even situation or even make a small profit.

Anyone know yet if this service will carry ads as well?

More cuts to the current service from the 19th September:

Discovery will broadcast from 6-11pm, Eurosport from 1-6pm and UKTV Gold from 4pm-1am, with a TUTV promo from 1-4pm.

Top Up TV Anytime has now appeared on the EPG, with TUTV Anytime 1 on channel 38, plus there is TUTV Anytime 2 & 3 too on 39 & 40 and TUTV Promo on 41.

Discovery Real Time has also moved from channel 28 to 42.

Presumably (and hopefully) the current TUTV channels will be removed from the EPG once they cease broadcasting, freeing up the lower numbers for things like the new Five channels.

I've a horrible feeling though they might stick around as promos for their programmes on TUTV anytime, though saying that Bloomberg, Boomerang and Toonami have been removed.

With these further channel cuts too it's possible a Five US/Five Life barker could launch from the 19th too.

AFAIK there will be ads, as the content will be recorded bits of the real channels as they go out normally, but you will be able to skip them like a real recording. No idea what ratings the channels usualy get on TUTV but I doubt any of them want to lose a few 10,000 viewers worth of ad revenue.

From Monday, you can also pay a further 5 pounds per month for "PictureBox" which will air a "blockbuster" movie every night when Anytime launches. I was speaking to a an adviser today and she said that UKTV Gold and TCM will CONTINUE broadcasting as regular channels. However UKTV Gold will not commence until 4pm and TCM will stop after the 11pm movie. So does that mean that TopUpTV will be available as an additional choice for those two channels or is the adviser talking out of her arse?

Picturebox it seems will launch with seven movies available, with one new movie added every night for download the next morning. I presume then that one movie will be removed each week as new ones are added.
