Just out of curiousity, what's the going rate for an ITV announcer these days? 20k?

Probably almost double that.

In that case, I doubt any of them are "demorolised".

40k or thereabouts is a fabulous amount of wonger for a relatively easy job. I'm surprised you didn't apply for it, Dan! Wink

Well they would be if they're about to lose their jobs!!

I might get in the car and drive to London to hand in my application for 40k!

I think you'll find 40k is a little over the mark!

LOL I will apply now. Very Happy

ITV has been desperately trying to chase the yoof audience for a few years now but can never get away from the fact that its audience is largely 55+ C2DE .
The chavvy accent thing is a bid to reflect / draw in what they think 'young people' want to hear. The BBC went through that awhile back when it turfed out its 'proper' sounding announcers in favour of a more 'off the street 'feel. Interestingly it's now swinging back the other way.
This isn't about genuine regional accents , just about the estuary /media english one hears alot these days. I am not suggesting we go back to the days of pompous sounding announcers ...but lets not go too much the other way!

The older announcers are always the best. Not that I'm saying they're all rubbish nowadays - far from it, but too much emphasis is being placed on youth.

It has to be close to that otherwise there'd be no point moving from the BBC to ITV as several people have done. Also I can't imagine ITV pays much less than Channel 4 and I believe that's in the same sort of area." Unquote

I think you'll find it's less about the choice to move and more about redundancy at the BBC . The reduction of the team had a lot to do with it and the hiring of younger, less expensive people. This coincided with the upheaval at ITV hence there were jobs to apply for.

What a ridiculous generalisation.

I don't think any announcers who've moved from the BBC to ITV were made redundant by the BBC, or that the changes at ITV coincided with any BBC redundancy process, but we seem to have strayed a long way off topic now anyway!

I hate to disagree but there have only been three ITV announcers since the re-brand in 2002 that have worked at the BBC previously. Two of them are still there and the other has left.
One of those two remaining were being made redundant, the other who is still there moved through choice. As I'm informed the salary that was on offer at ITV was better than that at the BBC and the hours far better.
THATS FROM THE HORSES MOUTH!

The rest of the team moved to ITV through choice.

Border has never been my favourite ITV station.I always feel the Scottish viewers have had a raw deal and we should have STV here .However i liked it when Border had local announcers that were invision. That all changed when Granada took over and the announcers were based at the NTC in Leeds.

I realy disliked the Leeds announcers when they first started providing continuity on Border especially when they announced a regional programme "Serving the whole of our region your with Border " and remember "whatever the game we always know the score in Scotsssssssssspoooooooooooooooooort."Those cheesy pre recorded announcements remained the same for nearly four years and were voiced by the GMG promo man Pete Haslam.

The Leeds team did their very best with what they had to do providing generic continuity on Border,Tyne Tees,Granada and Yorkshire.Mama Maggie Mash (Who i just love and realy miss)and Bob Preedie were the best on the team. They were lets say more mature than the others and what i loved about them was the fact they managed to get their personality through a little bit. Although their styles were a bit older than the others on the team i much preferred that and i was eighteen when they first arrived on Border.Helen and Kerry just sounded the same to me it was all very speaking through their noses.

However they all did grow on me eventually i guess that's what i'm trying to say here. But since the continuity went national back in 2002 i have never taken to any of them it just hasn't worked out for some reason. The only thing i do like for us in south Scotland at least we have a Scottish announcer on the current team.I'm no expert on it all but i realy think that ITV should rethink it all and rehire some of the former announcers especially the older ones (sorry if that sounds rude it's not meant to be ).There is only one girl on the current team who is quite new i like her and the ex Meridian announcers sound great one sounds realy sexy Wink i like him.

Actually i have taken to some and of course the Scottish guy has to stay as he is our only rep on the team.

I think we are talking to the same horses. As I said, ITv were hiring when the BBC were firing. Ofcourse ITV's salary is better than the BBC's . Same applies to all jobs. Nothing new there. Oh, and not all of the rest of the team moved by choice. Little matter of the ITV regions being laid off. Not much choice but to apply! As for the 40k . yea right.
