I just hope we don't get another situation like George Best with reporters outside the hospital just waiting for his death. Already some reports I've read tonight have included premature tributes to the man!

This is bad news indeed, I hope he can pull through this, according to Sky News, the parachute had already come on, but he was still travelling at fast speed. Crying or Very sad

And of course, everyone here is medically trained.

Erm, as a consultant surgeon I would classify myself as "medically trained".

You got me there, although I'd imagine that even consultant surgeons can't make an accurate diagnosis without seeing the patient or, at least, having some details that don't come from conflicting reports on the television.

Of course not. But 17 years of experience has taught me that patients in conditions like Richard's are very, very lucky to pull through. Sorry to be pessimistic.

I fail to belive that: a) Your a surgeon b) If you are, how you can make a claim like that without knowing anything other than "he was in a crash." The news reports know nothing yet. Nothing has been said and no statement made, so how you know what "condition" Richard is in I have no idea...

Aside from that, N24 are running a report every so often with a live OB from outside the hospital just to say "We don't know anything yet"

They're just saying how it's obviously serious, that he was unconscious when he left the crash site, but was beginning to regain consciousness upon arival at hospital.

I wish him a full and speedy... recovery.

I hope Richard Hammond does survive this most unfortunate accident for the sake of himself and his family.

The latest news is that Richard's condition is now stable

They we go now chaps: his condition has been confirmed by the hospital as stable.

So let's all stop saying "My thoughts are with his family, I hope he pulls through, I hope he doesn't die, my thoughts are with him, he's gonna be permanently brain damaged and I know this because I know this" etc. In the event his condition worsens, I'm sure this will be as pointless as it is now.

Yeah, but then otherwise, there would be nothing to say, and that would kind of defeat the whole idea of a forum topic where conversation is encouraged.

Oh and I hope he makes a full recovery as well.

If this is "coverage" of a live event, shouldn't this topic be in the newsroom...

Hmm The Sun has the bigger number but the Mirror has it in red, which one is the winner? Stupid newspapers.

No you're not wrong - you're just following a fine tradition of tasteless and offensive jokes about the nearly-dead.
But,of course, you do feel sorry for the geezer and his family.

Indeed I do, I just tend not to go in for the 'me too' postings. Someone else has usually already said what I think before I get there in these situations.

Typical red tops... can never get their facts right can they? Always one report conflicting with another...

Anyway... on a different subject, I had no idea that Richard had been replaced as presenter of Brainiac by Vic Reeves... not really sure about the choice of presenter, I mean, I know Brainiac is meant to be quite a funny programme... but its also about science-y technology type stuff... which Richard knew quite a lot about... so not quite sure it'll be the same when the new series starts.

I've been listening and reading and this is what I believe to be fairly truthful:

> Richard Hammond was trying to break the UK land speed record for a segment for Top Gear, and succeeded in doing so.

> The car was decelerating when the accident happened, having got to 300.3MPH

> As the car was braking, one braking parachute was deployed but the car veered off the runway.

> It turned over and dug into the ground, trapping Hammond inside the roll cage.

> Hammond was wearing a crash helmet and protective bodywear.

> He was breathing when paramedics and fire rescue got to him in the car

> He lost consciousness and was put in an air ambulance which took him to Leeds Infirmary, where he regained consciousness.

> His condition was described as critical, which has since stabilised.

Just for those who want to know all the details in one go.
