Channel 4 were advertising it during the commercials, rather than the programme trails. five have simply brought some of the commercial airtime to air there advert, it is also on E4, More 4 and uktv Gold, and probably other channel too. It is not uncommon, its the same as Sky advertising on 4.

Did I just see a promo for Grey's Anatomy on Channel 4? Why is Channel 4 advertising five's programmes? Can someone explain this to me please?

Is it my imagination, or did ITV and Channel 4 used to announce each other's programmes in continuity?

They did until 1993, when Channel 4 took over the control of there comercial airtime, up until 1993 ITV used to sell advertising time on behalf of channel 4, meaning there was cross promotion between channels.

Five obviosuly thought the kind of people who watch ER would be interested in Greys' Anatomy (and they'd be right), so bought advertising space on Channel 4.
Interestingly, they used the "coming soon" trailer, when it starts on Thursday - is there something stopping them saying specifically when it's on?

Yes. E4 Music had to change there timings from 6-12 everyday on the channel 4 network to 'Daily' on the external broadcasts. It's part of the rules laid out.

Umm, i'm not certain but my understanding of the reg was that you could make reference, on another channel, to the programme and channel but not precise details in case that confuses the audience. Or something like that. I've only see E4 brand it as "Daily" mind, how's Greys Anatomy being pitched on other channels?

I'm sure you can say the day, just not the time. Or maybe I'm mistaken...?
