You clearly weren't watching carefully. There was a lot of body language and other clues suggesting that there is plenty he would like to say, but just doesn't feel able. (For instance, I would suggest it seemed pretty clear that he wasn't happy about the apology - the way he kept emphasising that the BBC was apologising for 'errors' - he wasn't actually saying that the BBc/ Gilligan got the facts wrong).
And he's absolutely right. Whatever his personal feelings about the matter, he has a serious job to do to steer the BBC through the storm. He was extremely careful to stick only to the party line, not say anything which is going to be taken the wrong way and effectively deflected Gavin Esler's probing (although I'm sure Esler, in spite of his apparent 'hardness' at going at the questions was ultimately walking a fine line between sympathy/understanding of the situation and his need to be seen as a hard-headed, impartial journalist).

I certainly hope if this Mark Byford guy hopes to stay for longer than 24 hours, then he better learn to speak at a rate faster than 10 words per minute, and face it - with the way he answers questions he would be very screwed on 'Just a Minute'.
Only highlights how great Greg Dyke is!

Which well known names in particular are out there? I know that Lorraine Heggesy (controller of BBC1 - the woman who got rid of the balloons) was part of thursday's demonstration. Was she in the telegraph today? Any big name journalists or anything?
I've seen Dawn French, Jeremy Clarkson and Jonathan Ross to name but a few - but no journalists from the looks of it.
It's a shame there's no Greg Dyke mentioned in the names!!

Indeed. It must be a really odd situation for someone like Gavin Esler to be in. His name has appeared on that BBC advert, so he is clearly firmly in the pro-BBC camp and angry at the way the situation has been dealt with. So he must have a great deal of empathy with Byford, YET must be the impartial journalist.
So far, the BBC has proved that it can remain completely impartial while reporting the news and it should be credited for such reporting.

I forgive you
Of course it was Lord Ryder who gave the apology. I suspect relatively few people in the BBC actually agree with it anyway, quite probably including the Acting DG.
And yes, Daniel, I agree that the BBC has been about as impartial as it could possibly be in reporting this, which is to their credit.

True - my post was of a very...sl*tty nature on reflection.
He did always have the choice to not give this overall apology, it gave very much the impression of just him caving in under pressure.

Indeed. It is something Politicians just can't understand about the BBC, that's why they despise it so much.
Everyone at the BBC has Political opinions, but they put those aside when they do the job.
The MP's assume any questioning of their motives or actions is a direct attack because of the bias of the interviewer.

Don't forget that Ste is a fan of Fox News too, and he finds their reports reliable. But that says more about that particular moron of a poster.
Whats this got to do with me? I havent even mentioned FOX News! However, you are being harsh on FOX News, many of there reports are reliable and on par with BBC reports plus in many situations they do give both sides to arguments but I would be the first to admit this doesnt happen all the time. I dont have any problem with FOX critisizing the BBC though, maybe its just Murdoch /Sun/talkSport policy.
Why did the advert switch from going to be in the Times and to being in the Telegraph?

So you've got absolutely NO PROBLEM with Fox News telling the American nation that the BBC has persued a policy of anti-Americanism? Really? I sincerely hope that's not the case or I might have to find where you live.

From The Telegraph:
"within the corporation have an instinctive anti-American, pro-Brussels bias, and back the Palestinians against the Israelis."
Are you trying to say the BBC are not institutionally anti american?
