The post you quoted did say that the beeb had no decent sport "to show on a Saturday afternoon".

Sorry, but in 2005 Grandstand on Saturday afternoons covered . . .
World Darts, World Cup Cycling, Great North Cross Country, World Indoor Bowls, Australian Open Tennis, Powergen Cup Rugby Union, Racing from Haydock, UIttoxeter, Chepstow, Ascot (at temporary venues), Aintree, Epsom, Goodwood, Longchamp & Leopardstown, International Indoor Athletics, Six Nations Rugby, Masters Snooker, Davis Cup Tennis, European Indoor Athletics, Rugby League Challenge Cup, The Grand National, World Snooker Championship, Badminton Horse Trials, British Masters Golf, PGA Championship Golf
French Open Tennis, World Cup Rowing, Epsom Derby, Queen's Club Tennis, Royal Ascot, European Cup Athletics, Eastbourne Tennis, Wimbledon, Scottish Open Golf, World Athletics Trials, The Open Championship, European Show Jumping, World Swimming, Championships, Women's Open Golf, World Athletics Championships, Hickstead Derby Show Jumping, World Rowing Championships, World Athletics Final, European Three-Day Eventing, World Matchplay Golf, Great North Mile/Great North Run, Moto GP (World Motorcycling Championship), Grand Prix Snooker, Tri-Nations Rugby League, Grand Prix Gymnastics, International Open Bowls, Autumn Rugby Union Internationals, World Gymnastics Championships, Honda Challenge Tennis, UK Championship Snooker and Olympia World Cup Show Jumping

. . . plus Football Focus, Final Score and live FA Cup and International football shown as Match of the Day Live . . .

. . . and have/will show much the same in 2006, taking out some of the biennial events, and adding in the Winter Olympics, Commonwealth Games and World Cup.

Not all ratings-winning stuff, but plenty to keep sport on the BBC on Saturday afternoons I would think - either in Grandstand or otherwise.

Anyway, Roger Mosey says today on the BBC Sport Editor's blog that there has been a lot of discontent about the loss of the Grandstand theme tune. So although the format seems to be a gonor, they are 'seeing what they can do' regarding the theme tune.

Hang on. I don't recall seeing "Winter Olympics Grandstand", nor "Commonwealth Games Grandstand" and so far as I am aware there are no plans for "World Cup Grandstand". Yes, those events were shown by BBC Sport, and some of them took place on a Saturday afternoon, but Grandstand did not "cover them" as you put it. The "Grandstand" name has deliberately been kept off major events on a Saturday afternoon (no mention of it most recently during the Grand National, for example) for some time now in a lead up to this decision.

True. But the initial post said that the demise of Grandstand was due to the paucity of sport available on a Saturday afternoon on the BBC. As the later posts suggest, this perceived lack is somewhat illusory.

Exactly.

And sorry again mattlock, but the recent Grand National was branded as 'Grand National Grandstand'. It had a full set of Grandstand titles, and closing credits.

Roger mosey is looking for suggestions as to how to keep the Grandstand theme tune. Well ive emailed him mine, not sure if he'll like it but this is what it was...

At 12.10 the BBC1 aanouncer will say something like 'Now on BBC1 your saturday afternoon of sport starts here'. Then the music begins - and at the end instead of the Grandstand logo you get the BBC Sport logo. Then the presenter of the main event that afternoon will advertise that event. So today Hazel Irvine would say 'Good afternoon, later today we're live at the crucible etc etc... but now on BBC1 Manish Bhasin with Fottball Focus.'

Think it could work well

If you're going to keep the theme tune, you may as well keep the title.

All the fuss seems to be over whether a future multi-sport programme should be called Sports Interactive or Grandstand Interactive. Rolling Eyes

I couldn't care less about the theme tune - it's iconic status is associated with the programme!

Maybe this is the BBC's new plan - just get rid of the actual programmes and have the theme tunes played on a loop instead!

(I'd imagine a few people here would quite like a channel like that!)

Lol, well ive got a reply.. the head of BBC Sport has forwarded the email to Philip Bernie, the executive producer Grandstand, so it couldn't of been that bad an idea!

I rather feel this particular discussion has run its course, and we've gone round in circles here, but to summarise:-

1. The original poster suggested that the reason for Grandstand's demise was that there was "no decent sport" to show "on a Saturday afternoon".

2. Two replies were then received consisting of a list of events to which the BBC holds the rights.

3. I pointed out (and continue to maintain) that the most important of these sports would once have formed the main highlight of "Grandstand" with other sports surrounding them e.g. test cricket, rugby league, rugby union etc. Many of these major events are now shown elsewhere (i.e. the first two of my list apart from the Challenge Cup) or at different times to Saturday afternoon. Those major events such as the Commonwealth Games, Olympics etc. which occur every four years are not now shown under the "Grandstand" banner. The Grand National 2006 may well have been, but unless you saw the opening and closing titles you would not have know it, as I didn't.

4. Without those major events Grandstand cannot survive, and indeed will not. Just look at that long list of sports provided by "bbcsport".
Without "Googling" does anyone recall who won or what happened at the Women's Open Golf? Or the European Three Day Eventing? Does the winner of the Honda Challenge Tennis even remember who the winner of the Honda Challenge Tennis was?

If that's the quality of line-up you're relying on to assert that the statement that there is a paucity of sport on a Saturday afternoon is just "illusory" then I'm afraid we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

I don't agree, but I'll shut up and work on my CV for when I'm out of a job in a couple of years...
