Yes, unusual for an ad break to be announced, and it certainly made me watch and sit through the ads! I can see these themed ad breaks catching on, though they need the announcement otherwise no one would notice.
Not sure this Grand Designs Live quite lives up to the standards of the usual programme, though...

I think it may get better during the week, its just there have nothing to show as in a actually house for a couple of days,
Did they do it in the same way that they introduced the classic ads that appeared in the ad breaks of the history of channel 4 programme for their birthday last year?

I don't know, but to translate what the original poster said so eloquently, the announcer said "And now, a special commercial break featuring some people with their own Grand Designs".
I'm pretty sure they said "people", but I was just coming in the room at the time so I may have heard wrong. It was over the Pigeon ident (you probably got that much!).
I didn't see the point of this, it was hardly as special as the classic ad break for the anniversary. Unless perhaps they charge more money than usual under the pretext that due to the anno more people will stay and watch. In which case it's a short term thing that will get tired if they over use it.
That is because they are only adverts which have some sort of Grand Design in it. Although I also had never seen the SONY camera advert before. I must admit I like Grand Designs but I think all this hype is stretching what (as Kevin McCloud said in todays (5th May) Grand Designs Today) is a show for Plumbers and Builders.
