I caught the last couple of minutes of Granada News last night at 11.30, and it looked like it was pre-recorded. There was analogue tape dropout everywhere (including the studio bits)! Surely Granada couldn't be taping a news bulletin then going home early?

That would be pathetic. Please tell me it isn't so.....

It probably is taped.

In fact, correct me anyone if I am badly wrong, but I think HTV West's MAIN news is taped - you can see tape freeze at the beginning, although this may just be a taped opening sequence

That's just not good enough Granada!

YTV and Tyne Tees for certain do not tape their news bulletins like that (YTV's was proven not to be taped the other night as it was a bit of a fiasco Andrew says!). What if a news story breaks???

HTV Wales & West both have taped opening sequences. By the way, HTV Wales had an HTV News Special yesterday, making use of their rarely seen soft section of the studio!

I think most programmes have a taped opener (or at least partially taped), but the whole bulletin?

I know BBC North West Tonight's opening is pre-recorded - we've had a few jitters with the tape over the years!

Maybe it was their Christmas Party

Tape dropout? What's that look like?

I do know that the Carlton channels record the 'coming up at 6' trailers before and after Crossroads.

Sorry guys, Granada News definitely isn't taped! The taped bits are obvious (ie opening and closing titles, all reports and pictures over presenter reads) but the bulletin is most definitely live.

Can't understand the drop-out problem, unless you were watching on digital and there was a problem with the signal.

Well I know the late Central News has a recorded opening sequence, because the director made a mistake in cutting to the presenter too early, she read the headlines out, without moving her mouth!

Well I do know tape dropout when I see it, and I can tell you that that was not digital interference in any way, shape or form. It was analogue. If that bulletin wasn't taped (the dropout was exactly like Granada's idents c1995 where they'd flicker like hell) I'd love to know what could genuinely cause that sort of picture distortion!!!

Me too. I was sitting in the Granada newsroom when it went out, and it was definitely live.
