Agreed but many people really hate Carlton because of the whole rebranding Central and Westcountry to Carlton but Granada stripped every other England/Wales region completely of its regionality.
Also alot of Londoners didn't like the fact that Thames were to be replaced by them. Thames were afterall held in high regard (although not all of their programem was that great, the majority was good).
Also when they replaced Thames it mucked up a big chunk of ITV's schedule & when Central went an even bigger chunk was ruined

May not have made any difference -- Carlton had deep pockets, and there would have been nothing to stop them buying one of the Big 5 within six months of starting their franchise.

I wonder what people's perceptions would have been if Carlton won the TVS region instead in the 1991 Franchise round.

Imagine if they had bought Granada or LWT! I suppose we would still have ended up with 1 single ITV though.

To be honest I think Granada did more damage than Carlton because they brought up most of the companies and were also behind the single ITV but surely if Denis Forman was still there it would have been different. I think it was the effect of him leaving that had Granada buying other companies as it was mentioned in another thread. But it was both Carlton and Granada that had ruined themselves and the rest of ITV.
I still miss Thames, LWT and Central and I would like them to return but it will be very unlikely for many reasons. The first obvious one is that all these companies are owned and have been watered down over the years and they would need plenty of money and an adequate studio to do so. ( I also wish they were all autonomous as well but that will be too complicated)
Central used to have large comfy studios back then but thanks to Carlton and concrete cancer they just have one smaller building on Gas Street. But surely is it possible to extend this building either vertically or horizontally to accompany some large studios?

Out of interest, where did Carlton get all their money from? Did they have other interests / investments before winning their franchise?

I worked for them in the 1980s. They took over the UK operation of US company IVC (who made cameras and Quad VTRs) and moved the business into digital effects with the help of some people recruited from Quantel. That company was IVCC, then it became Abekas. I can remember Micheal Green and his Rolls Royce parked outside

If Carlton had bought Granada while they had the chance i think we'd be in a better state.Carlton would have probably owned Granada,LWT,Central,HTV,Yorkshire,Meridian,Anglia and Westcountry.I don't know if they'd have bothered with small ones like Border,Tyne Tees and Channel.Scottish,UTV and Grampian wouldn't have gone into Carlton.

AIUI as well as what you have just said, they also gained a signifcant stake in Central, and eventually bought Central's Film Production arm, Zenith by the end of the 1980's, which was making things like Inspector Morse at the time.
We would have ended up with one ITV in the end anyway, and to be honest the way things were going it was obviously going to be a London station or Granada being at the forefront of today's ITV. If Thames won in 1991they would have ended up buying up other stations anyway, but if Thames did win then I would question whether Granada would win anyway, I remember reading somewhere that it was rumoured for one of the big companies to go anyway.
From seeing what I've looked at on the Net, there was no denying that Thames made fantastic programmes for the Network, but how was the quality of programmes they made for London only? I'm not saying they were crap but from what I've seen with clips of both News operations, although Thames had a high quality News service, LNN seemed to be more edgy and did more about London in terms of Sport, Entertainment etc.
