Because it was an expensive box in the corner that people stared at for hours.

This programme, without a doubt is at the heart of my interest in television:

It's sad that these days there isn't really a popular show which can act as a springboard for talent, both on screen and behind the camera. It was a vital training ground for many people starting out in the industry in the 90s.

The style of the programme was mimicked across television, and we're not just talking shaky cameras and shouty presenters. For instance, the CITV 1998 break bumpers mentioned a few pages back. Prior to The BB break bumpers were boring, "Back Soon/Welcome Back" affairs, rather than a variety of bumpers with a similar theme.

And a nice clean version of the theme from that era too! Very Happy

Did the Big Breakfast invent the 'game' style interviews that now feature on everything from The One Show to Big Brother's Bit on the Side? Things like spinning a wheel to select an interview question or interviewees showing a skill or talent as a method to select questions or earn the right to plug their product. I don't remember anything like that before The Big Breakfast but then maybe I was watching the wrong programmes. Maybe other countries were already doing it.

Remember me come and see

Here's one of the games that the BB did with a guest.

I've always liked TV and pres, I grew up with archive tv so it just rubbed off really - I remember sneaking downstairs in the night to see a testcard, seeing vintage idents in the VHS collection, having a collection of IBA yearbooks, going to Brum hoping for a glimpse of Central's HQ, listening to 'Angels and other BBC TV Themes' and wondering what the shows were like, TVC, being brought up on a healthy diet of ITC dramas, trying every number on Oracle, typing TV listings into a basic program on a C64, being amazed at the ITV Schools rotomation, Tommy Boyd on CITV, searching the fan club section of UK Gold's teletext and writing for info about a magazine called TV Graphics Review and buying a replica BBC1 clock off the guy who ran it.

Ultimately though it's because Central had the best presentation in the 1990's.

It was the broom cupboard for me, seeing the inner workings of BBC1 laid bare, how Phillip moved to a different studio if they were on BBC2, seeing him reach out to press a button and put up a slide or play music. Absolutely fascinating.
