Thanks both of you. It's amazing the things you sometimes learn on this site!
One last question though, please: When ITN produced the Northern Ireland and Scotland bulletins in GMTV/Daybreak, would UTV and STV have continued supplying their news footage to ITN as normal (even though this would mean the footage could end up being used in the regional opt-out ITN was producing), and where were the ITN bulletins produced and broadcast from? Presumably not from London?

I don't think ITN ever produced STV bulletins during the GMTV era, think it was just UTV...
Spoke to my grandparents about the show last night who used to love GMTV, and loved Daybreak when Lorraine was on. They think the show is absolutely ludicrous because it has FOUR presenters around a big desk, which they find a total waste of money. I pointed out that BBC Breakfast also has four presenters (business and sport), they just don't all sit around the sofa at the start of the show, but they just thought it looks stupid.
I don't usually agree with Ally Ross but I love his summary in The Sun today. He says ITV has "failed to ditch its gambling addiction. On GMB this appears in the shape of the Wheel Of Cash, a cheap bit of tat that was salvaged from the Crackerjack landfill, which comes with the added nuisance of Andi Peters."
It looks like there is no station DOG then - is there still an itv DOG shown the rest of the time in Northern Ireland? The last time I checked, the DOG changed from itv to UTV at 9:25.
Whatever about GMB, there is certainly an ITV DOG on UTV during Lorraine.

Presumably ITV Plc handle playout of adverts (and programmes) for the STV and UTV GMB feeds, with STV/UTV just switching a feed they are provided with to their transmission chains (in the same way they IBA switched feeds to the transmitters back in the TVam days?) So the ITV1 dog will be added by ITV plc playout?

Of course during TV-am's early days the switchover was manual at each transmitter itself.
However, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the regional stations broadcast GMTV/Daybreak/GMB as if it's a programme, and they opt out of the programme for the regional news rather than opt in.
