That may sound simple enough - and logistically it probably is, but given that ITV is still trying to establish the GMB brand, I can'™t see it ever agreeing to the wholesale outsourcing of its breakfast programme to STV (even if only for one day). I think it would be far too unsettling for viewers in the rest of the UK to be confronted with an entirely different breakfast programme at time of the day.
Why would the rest of the UK be confronted by an entirely different breakfast programme if ITV commissioned a alternative programme for Scotland for the day?
STV presenters, STV studio set, STV graphics. I think all of that would be quite unsettling for viewers in England, Wales and NI switching on to ITV first thing in the morning and expecting GMB to pop up?
But they wouldn't. A programme commissioned for Scotland would only be visible to viewers in Scotland. Just because GMB normally broadcasts one national edition, there's no reason they can't provide alternative programmes to different regions - it's their network to do with as they wish in the morning.
The simple solution would be for ITV Breakfast to commission a Scotland programme for the day, and award the commission contract to STV.
Licence and viewers satisfied.
