Pip is freelance - always thought she was good on Tyne Tees.

Pip has been linked with GMB for some time - I think. I remember some sort of Instagram post relating to the programme before it launched.

Can someone help explain why most foreign lives on GMB have a black border, like above?

Its called Blanking.

You shouldn't normally see vertical blanking that significant on a standard SD (or SD unconverted source). You routinely see a bit of Line 23 WSS and occasionally some VITC (or US CC) on poorly timed sources - but you shouldn't see black bars top and bottom in active.

Blanking is more of an issue horizontally - and you might get a bit of extra black left and right (more so through an SD gallery than an HD one - as SD galleries actually run slightly wider than 16:9 with 9 extra samples each side outside the 16:9 active area) - and SD sources often have the odd little bit of a timing error that means the blanking extends into active one side or t'other. (Some SD up converters also incorrectly scale 720->1920 rather than 702->1920 so you get the extra 9 samples each side in HD - which you shouldn't...)

That looks a bit less than brilliant - was the OB a proper SNG or could it have been an IP job (which may have come through a slightly strange route)?

Ive noticed that before but not to that extent, I thought it was just ITV Player.

Tuned in at 6:50 and thought something was wrong with John’s eye, just said it was a mosquito bite on the eye lid, ouch!!

He does keep mentioning it quite a lot actually, not sure why he has to keep pointing it out.
