Can someone remind me. I keep reading that the GMTV formula worked in its day. In a nutshell, why did it work?

I think part of it came down to the BBC offering a hard news service with channel 4 offering an entertainment programme, with GMTV falling into the middle somewhere.

Times move on and now that Channel 4 don't offer anything for the morning and Breakfast is less hard news and more balanced - ITV are a bit unlucky. GMTV was more 'of the time' as it were and people want a completely different thing for breakfast television.

And the target age of GMTV twenty years ago is the sort of age that many Big Breakfast viewers would be now - and having grown up on that something GMTV-esque is not the sort of thing they want to watch first thing in the morning.

Really think though the biggest problem GMB has is over analysing everything. 150 pages here show that analysing every little minute detail actually gets you nowhere.

Except TV executives DO watch this site, and ARE aware of the comments made here.

We may just be 'TV Anoraks': but they know we reflect the mood of others.

Look at ITV Breakfast's performance in audience appreciation and viewing figures in the last decade. The more they have focused on fluff and showbiz the more ratings have dropped.

In reference, the Mirror article we can question it's validity and the sources that have been used, but it focuses on entirely on the perception of Susanna Reid. It's not about the presenters, it's the content as mentioned by so many others and how it is presented. News can be engaging to wider audience, but it has to be relevant. I don't buy into the idea that a more news orientated programme simply turn's viewers off especially housewives with children.

My concern about the underlying message of the end of that article is that the general public want more 'weather, fun stories, competitions and fluff'. Therefore implying that GMB should follow the same failed route of making the show more fluffy and showbiz. I hope ITV have learned especially Daybreak v2 that it does not work which resulted in the loss of 100,000 viewers over a year and a half.

News style of opening, no more 'Good Morning, I am..', instead a group chat sort of thing.

Just watched part of this mornings programme. Its like Sean's just a spare part, they have just been sending him out and its making it feel that he isn't part of the team, but just a 'reporter'. Why don't they send Charlotte out or even Ben or Susanna? The other presenters seem more important than him, and he is just seen as the 'Sports guy'. I think he needs to be more involved in the programme and not just doing bits here and there.

I completely get what you're saying.

But, with respect, he is just the sports guy. That's a pretty important role I would say. Do they need 4 main presenters? Most seem to prefer it with 3 and I know I certainly do - it is really nice to have him on an interesting sport location, especially in the summer. He will almost definitely be in Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games. In fact - I think it would be really nice to have him outside even more often on a sort of roadshow type thing - over the summer holidays. This could be good for publicity over the holidays and he could go to less mainstream things. Obviously he has family commitments so I'm not suggesting that he is permanently away from his wife and kids...

It's not like he's just doing 'bits here and there' - he is there every episode and still plays a main role - obviously they could increase the time he is on screen though.

Those shows where Ben and Susanna were outside, Sean at Wimbledon and Charlotte doing the news, have been the best in my opinion. I loved that - I think it was still harmonious and the chemistry was still there.

And reporters are still part of the team.

I do get what you're saying, and I absolutely agree with it to an extent, but I think he is still really important.

Yes I suppose everyone involved is in some way important but yes the time he is on screen should be increased.

In other news there was a problem with playing the sting at 7.30, it was repeated slightly:

Here in STV land (in my mind, the 'S' doesn't stand for Scottish... Wink ) we only got from 0:04 onwards, I assumed it was the crap way the were opting back to network. They are really terrible on opting after the coming up is over, and then usually opt back half way through the return sting, and usually cut in at 6am, halfway through the first headline.

I guess network realised they were coming in a bit early so quickly faded out the sting in time to replay it?

Yes probably. Here in ITV Border Scotland when watching on channel 103 its always a really harsh cut. It always cuts out at least half of the sting. I also find it annoying I have to switch between 178 (HD) to 103 when local news comes on, other wise I will get Granada. Is there no way they can sort that, or is it because Granada is in HD and Border not?
