As I mentioned, clearly there are some unavoidable situations - and maybe it is a fault of some of their contracts, but it's breakfast TV, not a shift down the coal mine. If breakfast radio presenters can manage five day weeks (often with a weekend shift too), why can breakfast TV presenters rarely manage more than four?

I am surprised at how rarely the full team seem to be on screen at the moment. In these early stages, surely it's important for viewers to get to know the presenters and for the programme to bed-in with a bit of stability and consistency.

In radio, it's common when launching a new breakfast show for there to be a tacit agreement that the new presenter won't book any holiday for the first three months or so to allow the programme to establish itself. Okay, so there are some unavoidable situations, such as Ben being involved in Soccer Aid, but GMB having so many stand-ins so often can't help its cause.

Does it bother you? I doesn't bother me, I really like it with 3 people. Plus, Sean was presenting, just from Brazil. He still said the "Hi there good morning I'm Sean Fletcher..." at the TOTH. It's like having Mark Austin presenting from another country on News at Ten. It's not a problem and Julie cope on her own at the desk... Let's not forget that on Good Morning Britain there is still 3 people at the desk, Laura/Alex and normally Richard in the studio with Andi doing his thing. So, Sean was presenting. And when Ranvir was at Stephen Sutton's vigil, it wasn't really a problem.

I don't see why this would be a problem. Nobody says, "I'M SO ANGRY AT ITV FOR ONLY HAVING 3 PRESENTERS AT THE DESK! IT'S TOO MUCH CHANGE AND I CAN'T DEAL WITH IT! Crying or Very sad " or "RIGHT, THAT'S IT, I'M SWITCHING OVER TO BREAKFAST BECAUSE ITV ARE SHOWING THEIR COMMITMENT TO SPORT BY SENDING A PRESENTER TO BRAZIL." and nobody says "This is so upsetting. Why aren't Susanna, Charlotte, Ben and Sean altogether when this how has only been on air for a month and a half? I'm never watching this show again."

It's breakfast television for goodness sake! I don't care which presenter or how many of them are presenting, I want the news, weather and sport (and travel in my region) for the whole country and the rest of the world. I don't think the ratings are going to drop if there are stand-ins, or variations in the size of the presenting team. It's nice to have some variety.

The point is if you're trying to create a new programme and get people used to it, as much consistency as possible has to be a good thing. Familiarity in any television programme is important.

Your imaginary conversations have entertained me though, so thanks for those.

Remember:
1. Its breakfast TV- 3.00am starts are hard work especially over 5 days a week.
2. Susanna and Charlotte seem to be on 4 day contracts.
3. Sean is in Brazil- you cant expect anyone to go away for a month without allowing him time with his family. (+ broadcasters appear to treat their staff nicely)
4. Ben Shephard can not be expected to present a show live from London between 6am - 8:30 am after playing a charity football match in front of 70,000 up in Manchester: finishing at 10:30pm.

I think that the four of them are working hard- but it is equally important that relief presenters are initiated into the programme, and the audience become aware of them.

I agree with what your saying, but plenty of people get up at that time, who do not normal jobs, and paid far less;). Just saying. Although, I like kate, John and ranvir as relief presenters.

And no one who's watched breakfast TV over the last 30 years is familiar with John Staplegun.....

Im not sure there are many normal jobs that require people to be awake at 3.00am every morning.

They aren't familiar with them in the current format, nor with the other members of the presenting line up, Its equally important that Ranvir and Kate are integrated into the team, seeing as they are scheduled relief. Stapleton not so much, as both of the guys present five mornings a week.

I can tell from that statement you've never worked in retail. Most supermarkets have early morning staff, starting at around 5am at earliest, for which, you would be waking up somewhere around 3am or 3.30am depending on how close they are to the store.

Radio presenters wont get up as early. Nick Grimshaw gets up at 5am IIRC.

That's because someone does all the hard work for him.

John is a breakfast TV legend! TV-am, Breakfast Time, GMTV, Daybreak and GMB. Everyone who has been a watcher of ITV Breakfast in the last 3 decades knows who he is. He seems to be on as much as Ben at the moment anyway.

Anyway, get into the real world! You don't think there are people work night shifts or early morning shift to provide for their family? Hospitals etc. aren't just a daytime operation!
