Would TVam have triumphed if Breakfast Time hadn't have changed to the Breakfast News format though?

Yes. Breakfast Time retreated in the face of TV-am's growing popularity.

On the subject of ITV2, I think The Big Breakfast would be perfect if they're keen to make a grab for a younger market share in the mornings.

Well considering the ratings that GMB gets, you have to assume they would go even lower once you reduce the appeal to a younger demographic and shove it further up the EPG. I think you'd need to change the name too to make it seem relevent to that audience today.

Not saying to cancel GMB, but to have two shows appealing to different audiences.

I understood, what I was saying is they'd be going for a demographic that aren't used to watching TV at that time and the audience they'd be going for would be dramatically smaller than what Good Morning Britain gets.

So the question is at what point does live a breakfast show become profitable? 200,000 Viewers? 400,000 Viewers?

If RI:SE and The Big Breakfast weren't working in position 4, the format isn't going to work in ITV 2s position. You could possibly use it as a loss leader to get content people will share around social media across the day however but you'd probably need a decent level of celebrity guests for that.

The Big Breakfast worked in position 4 at one time, and there is no reason it couldn't come back and protect some valuable market share for ITV. Lets not forget that people are saying younger viewers are being lost to the various multichannels. I really think the channel position is only a tiny part of the ratings issue for any breakfast show.

They really need to get some bands and groups performing in the studio - especially during the school holidays.

It'll attract an audience depending on the act, and if they can get some big names in - and consistently do it - then they might find their audience share start to grow a bit.

Would that not be better suited to Lorraine? GMB is, in reality, a morning Breakfast show combining news, sport, business, entertainment, wheras Lorraine would be more of a Lifestyle show, and so bands would be better on that. In the GMTV era, artists performing live used to occur after 09:00.

I've never read or seen that claim made in any of the accounts of the time that I've read - maybe I've been reading the wrong things.
