Time to see quite how seriously ITV take their 'Britain Get Talking' campaign. Some of Piers's remarks over the years about mental health had already been problematic enough and stuck out like a sore thumb given the ITV focus on mental health.

His response today to a woman saying she felt suicidal is just beyond the pale - yet I have no faith ITV will punish him in any meaningful way.

It's the same with The Jeremy Kyle Show, ITV tolerated it for years because it rated well and only axed it when it became a liability.

Yes, it seems rather jarring to run in-depth campaigns across all major programmes, encouraging the viewers to speak up about their mental health. It’s ok not to be ok, etc.

Indeed, This Morning in particular did the chilling reenactment (using cardboard silhouettes) of male ‘sufferers‘ atop the ITV HQ on the South Bank, drawing attention to the male suicide rate. And a whole host of big names lent their voices to the various ITV campaigns.

And now, one of the most famous people in the world speaks out about her mental health and suicidal thoughts and one of ITV’s biggest names pours scorn on the notion, hinting that she’s lying?

We get it, Piers. You don’t like Meghan. For whatever reason. But don’t belittle the subject of mental health and suicide. It’s really not correct.

I know how the show works and how important Piers is for ratings, etc. However, we can’t have two rules. If we did have two rules in public broadcasting, Kay Burley would still be on Sky News right now. (I know Piers hasn’t ‘broken the law’, but his outbursts need to be reigned-in).

I agree with the sentiments expressed here this morning. I’m usually a massive fan of Piers but I was borderline appalled by him this morning.

You are only now appalled by Piers Morgan? Where have you been for the last 30 years?

In terms of journalistic standards, the absolute worst moment was this:
Quote:
They trash everybody. They basically make out the entire Royal Family are a bunch of white supremacists.

Just outrageous, I had to actually go back and check I had heard correctly. They then showed the clip Piers Morgan was referring to here after he says this, and the interviewee says no such thing.

This quote in particular takes what was said so entirely out of context, to the point where it is misleading the audience. At no point do either of the interviewees mention the phrase 'white supremacy', it is chosen by Morgan. Given the interview did not play out in full, it's reasonable that some of the audience were mislead by this comment on the content of the interview. Morgan's phrasing is designed to deliberately exaggerate what was actually said by the two interviewees, and is simply not factual.

Given how wildly inaccurate and crass this remark is, I've reported it to OFCOM, but, given how toothless they are, I expect absolutely nothing to come of it.

I may be a bit naive, but isn’t Piers supposed to be an impartial journalist?

He's neither of those things.

He's a Twitter feed made manifest.

Normally I’m shocked and a little taken aback. Never appalled.

He was challenged by Susanna and Trisha Goddard (who was exquisite this morning!) on a similar remark he made about Harry and Meghan calling the Royal Family "racists". They, of course, never said that.

He is, but again I think his ability to be human about things has been his strength throughout the pandemic. If you look at American news outlets, journalists are allowed to show an opinion and to convey this, within reason, as long as the overall coverage shows some balance. CNN do this very masterfully, reporting the facts truthfully but openly critical from a Democratic perspective, but often featuring a Republican spokesperson to help counter any bias. I actually like this in principle, and think it's a very refreshing approach compared to the strict "neutral" stance every reporter has to take on the BBC. However, this morning shows what happens when it goes too far - and in this instance, Piers is veering off facts to pure personal opinion. He's in Fox News territory, and that's not good.

Piers has stepped over the line many times, I remember he was critical of Ariana Grande for not visiting fans who were injured in the Manchester Arena bombings which I thought was crass but TBF he did apologise later on.
