I wonder if not featuring a drone shot of Television Centre in the opening titles had anything to do with Grenfell Tower which is right next to the building.

No, as it isn’t right next to it, and secondly if TVC is shot in the direction it always is, it’d be behind the camera.

They were never going to use a shot of TVC, or mention ‘live from Television Centre’ or anything like that.

After reading the NewscastStudio piece it seems we're yet to see the green room and the 'two-person news desk', assuming that's not the main anchor desk as that's obviously fit for more than two people.

The single line strap text needs moving down a few pixels and the box on the right seems unnecessarily big. The earlier on Good Morning Britain & #GMB for instance has a lot of wasted space

When they don't have the box on the right of the strap (which is most of the time) having the text squashed up looks odd so why not let it fill the whole box and just squish it as or when the box is used on the right

I think they may have mistaken the weather desk for a news desk.

It all looks lovely and I'm glad it isn't a dramatic change. If I could criticise anything, it's that the area in the left hand corner comes across a bit flat whereas before it had a lot more depth and detail than just a couple of screens. It almost seems like an afterthought, but I really liked the detail that went into the old set.

All of the pieces are flexible and can move.

They've had the first technical problem, asking a Labour MP a question for about a minute that she couldn't hear. Eventually they re-established sound.

"Headlines Every 15 Minutes" seems a dangerous promise - the first few minutes I saw at 7:00am was Dickie Arnold talking rubbish, and they're over-running now.

You will see the ticker reset to the headlines at quarter past and to the hour to keep to that promise. Well at least the old ticker used to do that. And they do eventually get to Charlotte with the headlines even if it isn’t dead on time.

Still does.

OK... I'm going to go against the grain here, but I'm not really a fan of the new set. It's OK but not that great in my view.

Can't quite put my finger on it but it just doesn't look quite right. It looks smart, yes, but the whole thing feels like it doesn't quite gel together. The big screen is an improvement but they really need to get the framing of St Pauls between the two anchor seats correct - it looks really odd. Agree about the ticker - I think they can just drop it as it seems like a token gesture to keep it. Nice touch with the LED changing bar changing according to the segment and the desk is a massive improvement though.

Some of the sideshots when they do an interview do look a bit odd because the screen now takes up so much space but perhaps the framing can be sorted out. It seems to end up as a shot of the screen and then a random bit of poorly up-lighted 'white wall'. The 'screens' area on poles just seems overly fussy. I can see why they use different images when interviewing a guest but I just think it makes the shot look very busy behind them and quite distracting.

I'm sorry but the weather area looks very American and tacky - I think it worked better before where it was incorporated as part of the set behind the news presenter so they felt more part of the team. Both this and the 'screens' area just feel a bit 'just because you can doesn't mean you should'. I know that they're limited in TC3 as the studio height it a lot higher and therefore it is more difficult to do, but I did like how the old set had elements that rose up and went across the ceiling to give more depth to it on the wide shots. It feels a bit empty with just the 'illuminated grid' above the main desk.

I just find it strange how some parts are really busy (e.g. the sofa area and the 'screens' area) and others look really sparse (e.g. the corner between the news presenter and the weather area). Curved bits, angular bits, a motif running across in places and not others - it feels a bit over the place. Although the other set was smaller, I felt it had more 'balance' overall and it flowed better within itself. I'm sure they'll be tweaks as the weeks go on. The good thing about the size of Studio 5 was that the design made it feel more like a room, rather than a set as it literally covered all the walls, doors and the ceiling which made it feel a bit more warmer and welcoming. The TC3 set is not awful by any means but I think it adapting in places - it just feels more like a set in a big space so it looks rather empty in places and then has loads of things crammed into corners.

I think one problem they have is that their previous set worked really well so this one has a lot to live up to. Credit that they've put a lot of effort into it though and to be fair, it looks a hell of a lot better than quite a few sets that somehow end up on screen. Think the best line so far has been 'I knew that there was one problem with the new set and that is Piers still being here'!

I prepare to now step into the firing line and await the inevitable protests... Very Happy

Yes - though it does seem like anticipatory timing for some spoken headlines.

Piers went off on one just after 7:03am's opening sequence (shortened due to the overrun) because neither party sent a frontbencher for what turned out to be quite a dreary interview on the Syria bombing. It's that sort of unnecessary crap that makes GMB an awful watch. That, and the Andi Peters competition segment.
