Just thinking about it... given the set up of both the GMB and This Morning sets being located within the same studio, does this now cause problems in the case of Breaking News mornings which cause GMB to stay on air?
Obviously this happened during the Brussels bombing, for the Grenfell Tower fire and for the Manchester bombing, but would the noise of the This Morning crew setting up and rehearsing be audible to viewers in this case.
Therefore are they going to be more reliant on ITV News filling at least the Jeremy Kyle gap in these instances?
I don't understand why but Richard Arnold popped up for about three minutes at ten past seven to waffle about the Kardashians. I wish they'd can drivel like this.
Good Morning Britain really is beautiful - the set design, the styling, the music - they have taken the best stylistic parts of US morning TV without taking the worst of trashy American television. I even quite like Piers Morgan on the show, he's a personality and Susanna is essentially "us", shuddering every time he opens his ignorant mouth. Its relatable.
The things that let the programme down:
- the amount of ad breaks, it makes it unwatchable as a news service because most of the time you catch it in an ad break. Not sure how they could address that, other than having more sponsored segments and fewer ad breaks. Can they do product placement, or is it a news service?
- Andi Peters' competitions. This has always dragged the tone of the show right down into the gutter, from day one. But, it makes them money I suppose.
- The regional opts... it's a shame they done so on the cheap and are usually just a presenter reading the headlines in front of a screen. It jarrs with the rest of the glossy show.
The fact that ratings are constantly increasing would suggest that most viewers aren’t that bothered.
I myself think that people tune in to GMB because of Piers and his ranting. Ever since he joined in 2015 the ratings have improved massively.
My mother-in-law records GMB every day, and plays it back in the afternoon or evening. She's not in the least bit interested in the (proper) news content. I suspect although probably in a minority as far as recording it goes, clearly not alone being attracted to the show's style and presenters.
Keep things in perspective though, BBC Breakfast and GMB audience figures combined, are dwarfed by radio at that time of the day.
