they probably cue the regions when Piers wants a toilet break.

When this is all over, do we think Lorraine's show will return or will it stick with GMB with Lorraine? It seems to me that it might make more sense and be cheaper to continue like this.

Sure. Heck, why not have GMB with Phil & Holly followed by GMB with the Loose Women too?

GMB's commitment to regional news at breakfast time even before the pandemic was lax - I never understood why they bother with regional news anymore during GMB, when there is never a clear set time and when the bulletins air it is a blink and you miss them update.

Typical regional news during GMB is three top regional stories, a sponsorship link into the local weather and goodbye. Hardly worth them producing these bulletins in the first place.

OFCOM should decide once and for all whether ITV breakfast programming needs regional news in them anymore. TV-am never bothered and GMTV only bothered after they were forced into it.

This is not true. Regional news was offered by the Sunrise consortium as part of it’s original licence application. They were not forced into anything.

While a sarcy retort might be all the rage here he does raise a valid question and something which couldn't be ruled out. Television is going to take a big hit this year and the coming years once the current situation is over. Lorraine worked well up to 2010 being GMTV with Lorraine, so it wouldn't be out of the question that they could go back to that.

The coronavirus I'd say has given many broadcasters pause for thought on how they produce programmes.

"GMTV with Lorrraine" isn't a good example to use, this was in the era when they were in steep decline.

Also you run the risk of GMB being associated with very light content in normal circumstances, that people would run away with

I know a fair few people who don't watch Good Morning Britain (The Piers Morgan Show) but do watch Lorraine. I think ITV's daytime shows should all have their own identities in order to avoid confusion.

GMB doesn't use the soft set as much. Perhaps a small change for Lorraine to make more use there with relevant branding..?

I think we find in TV these ideas tend to be cyclical. I’m sure ITV will be paying close attention to see how Lorraine’s figures have been affected by merging her into the GMB brand and if they judge it to have not harmed the ratings they’ll be open to changing things long term. Of course other factors will include whether Lorraine would be happy to go along with it, they may also take in account whether it might be beneficial to not have to create a new presenter led brand if Lorraine decides to leave in the near future.

I agree with all_night, when they suggest that many of these changes to the methods of TV production due to current situation might be adopted long term as ways of working.

Yes, I can see the logic here. They could even - since GMB barely ever seems to use the sofa any more (even before this current 'harder news' situation began) - have Lorraine utilise the sofa area in the event they didn't feel a desk was the best environment for her (once the fluffier stuff starts creeping back in after all this is over). The only problem would be the logistics of having barely any gap between the use of that studio for what would then be the 6am-9:55am (ish) period and then This Morning beginning at 10am.

On the subject of regional bulletins, its better when they have a set times for the bulletins. The newsreaders have started saying "we'll be back within the hour" as the time isn't always set in stone.

There used to be 4 bulletins during the early days of GMTV - 6.15, 6.45, 7.30 and 8.30. I think they should have 4 especially as GMB has been extended to 9am (10am if we count Lorraine as GMB as well). There is a massive gap from about 8.15am until the lunchtime news 1.55pm so they could do with another bulletin to fill the gap.

Btw im talking about when things return to normal, not suggesting they add extra in the current circumstances.

GMB had four as well when they first started leading into the half hour and hour opposite the regional bulletins on Breakfast before putting them back to where GMTV had them in the first ten minutes of the hour.

Although since they extended the show it makes sense to have a bulletin within that half hour of news at the beginning (and take it out of the first half hour with Piers at 6.30) I am surprised they didn't push them later as surely across the newsrooms having staff come in half an hour later across all regions would actually add up over the year.

As for the gap between bulletins that's an ITV issue rather than a GMB issue but it is a shame that ITV didn't use the extension of This Morning as an opportunity to at least restore the national summary. I assume the 9am national summary in Lorraine was discontinued when the schedules changed.
