Maybe the audience had matured enough to get fed up of banality and dumbed down premium rate competitions? The 1980s style of commercial breakfast television had no longer moved with the times.

Isn't that why Eamonn left? Because of the silly competitions and fluffy celeb guff taking over the news? To be honest I'm not surprised they didn't find a strong replacement for Eamonn because I can't think of anyone who would want to risk their credibility. GMTV did eventually mature with the 2009 revamp and bringing in Emma Crosby but by then the damage was already done.

It would seem an odd reason for him to leave given that GMTV was always pretty lightweight and fluffy, and hardly what you’d call news-driven.

That has been his subsequent spin but the truth was that GMTV weren't willing to pay him more money. He already had a 500k a year deal, 3 day week and 3 full months off in the summer.
That was negotiated when the BBC were trying to poach him for Breakfast before Dermot Murnaghan joined.

Indeed and at the time he said he was quitting because he was sick of 3am starts. A few months later he signed up for Sunrise.

GMB is known for its lively and robust discussion of the news agenda and recently covered Peter Phillips’ appearance in a Chinese milk advertisement.

The discussion was focused on whether it was appropriate for members of the Royal family to endorse products abroad in this manner, and was live and unscripted. Piers Morgan’s comments, and his mimicking of the Chinese language in the advertisement, was a spontaneous reaction to the advertisement.

These comments were intended to mock a member of the Royal Family and were not intended to mock or denigrate Chinese people, their language or accent.

ITV regrets any offence Piers' comments may unintentionally have caused.

Is that the first time ITV have issued a press release apology for something Piers has said?

ITV only apologise if they have been forced by Ofcom to do it, so I think this is a first.

Probably more about arse covering than anything Ofcom want or decide, which can be anywhere up a few months later after the event, at which point either nobody cares or they've all forgotten about it.

Say sorry publicly and when Ofcom come knocking they'll notice the public apology and ITV hope they decide the matter's closed.

The so called Famous Five launched the first incarnation of GMB with their 'Mission to Explain' and when that failed to attract viewers and advertisers, apart from Walls sausages and Ponds face cream, the move downmarket with bingo numbers, horoscopes etc. eventually proved to be a ratings winner.

The limited advertising was initially due to a dispute with Equity though. Hence the Walls ad featuring its MD rather than professional actors
