Because the speaking clock did use pips on it ("at the third stroke the time sponsored by <somebody> will be six twenty three precisely"), its common to think it and the pips from the BBC were one and the same thing.

The speaking clock uses strokes, the BBC use pips. Can’t you tell the difference? Very Happy

Evidently not.

Shouldn't have opened my mouth really on this, should I? Smile

Just joking! In fact I wonder why the BBC term became pips instead of strokes. Though the thread’s been derailed enough as it is!

The history of both systems are very interesting reads. The speaking clock network had a Grade 1 priority status in the GPO/Cold War era, as a standby national comms network................

Surprised if there wasn't any uplift for Good Morning Britain as a result of Bill Turnbull presenting.

With all due respect his popularity is not exactly Ant & Dec level is it? His time on Breakfast was moderately popular. It was insane to think people were going to switch over to GMB en masse because Bill Turnball was presenting.

I'm struggling to imagine any other method via an audio domain of signalling an accurate time check?

Ruth Madoc on a xylophone?

Very good.

BTW I don't recall that line from 'Intro-Outro'?

As an aside I was listening to Five Live in the car the other day and it struck me how good Tony Livesey would be on GMB.

Has he ever guest hosted Breakfast considering his NWT connections?

Don’t think so. Don’t recall seeing him on NWT since they moved to Salford (although I presume he’s based there now for Five Live?).

Yes he's based there presenting Drive, which is on at the same time as NWT.

It won't have any uplift because Bill is on. BBC Breakfast ratings have been pretty similar for years, it makes no difference who is presenting. GMB is slightly different in the sense its building around Piers but its ratings generally do ok when he's not there too.

He did present it once recently as a fill in, I remember turning on and being surprised, can't recall if he was called in on short notice or not but they did talk about it. Sorry I don't have any more details, I searched Twitter and can't seem to find mention of it there yet.
